What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Acthar Gel (repository corticotropin injection) is an injectable medication administered subcutaneously (underneath the skin) or intramuscularly (into the muscle) for the treatment of:

  • Infantile spasms in infants and children who are younger than 2 years old
  • Multiple sclerosis exacerbations in adults
  • Rheumatic, collagen, dermatologic, allergic, ophthalmic, and respiratory diseases and disorders and state of edema (swelling)

Acthar Gel is available in multi-dose vials and single-dose, prefilled SelfJect injectors. The SelfJect injectors should only be used for subcutaneous administration.

Directions

Acthar Gel should be administered as the treating physician has prescribed. You or a caregiver should receive instructions by a qualified healthcare provider regarding the proper storage, preparation, administration, and disposal of Acthar Gel.

Never share products, needles, or syringes with other people.

Inform the treating physician of any questions or concerns you have.

Ingredients

Repository corticotropin is the active ingredient in Acthar Gel.

Contraindications

Do not administer Acthar Gel:

  • Into a vein (intravenously)
  • To infants younger than 2 years old with suspected congenital infections
  • With live or live attenuated vaccines in patients receiving immunosuppressive doses of Acthar Gel
  • In patients who have scleroderma, osteoporosis, systemic fungal infections, ocular herpes simplex, recent surgery, history of or active peptic ulcer, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure that is uncontrolled, primary adrenocortical insufficiency, adrenocortical hyperfunction, or sensitivity to proteins of porcine (swine, pig) origin

Cautions

  • Before you or your child starts treatment with Acthar Gel, discuss the following with the treating physician:
    • You or your child’s medications
    • You or your child’s allergies
    • You or your child’s current health issues
    • You or your child’s past medical history
    • If you or your child is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Acthar Gel is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Masking of signs and symptoms of infection is possible as well as increased vulnerability to infections and greater risk for worsening, spread, or reactivation of latent infections
    • Adrenal insufficiency after receiving prolonged treatment
    • Cushing’s syndrome
    • High blood pressure, salt and water retention, decreased potassium levels in the blood
    • The symptoms of underlying diseases or disorders may be masked
    • Perforation and bleeding of the intestines and stomach
    • Changes in mood and behavior
    • Symptoms of diabetes and myasthenia gravis can worsen
    • Cataracts, glaucoma, and infections of the eye
    • Potential immunogenicity
    • Potential enhanced effect in patients who have liver cirrhosis or hypothyroidism
    • Negative impacts on growth and physical development; pediatric patients receiving long-term therapy should be monitored
    • Decreased bone mineral density that can result in osteoporosis

Side Effects

Acthar Gel side effects include but are not limited to reactions at the injection site, fatigue, general discomfort, weakness, lethargy, fluid retention (including peripheral swelling), trouble sleeping, headache, and elevated blood sugar levels.

Pediatric patients being treated for infantile spasms may experience increased risk of infection, convulsions, high blood pressure, irritability, and fever.

Immediately call a doctor if you or your child develops bothersome or persistent side effects.
