What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Adthyza (thyroid tablets, USP) is an oral medication prescribed to treat hypothyroidism. Adthyza can also treat or prevent a variety of euthyroid goiters and can help manage thyroid cancer.

Adthyza is dispensed as oral tablets in the following strengths:

  • 16.25 mg (9.5 mcg of T4/2.25 mcg of T3)
  • 32.5 mg (19 mcg of T4/4.5 mcg of T3)
  • 65 mg (38 mcg of T4/9 mcg of T3)
  • 97.5 mg (57 mcg of T4/13.5 mcg of T3)
  • 130 mg (76 mcg of T4/18 mcg of T3)

Directions

Adthyza should be taken exactly as your doctor has instructed. The medication guide that accompanies your prescription should be read carefully.

Your doctor will tell you how much Adthyza you should take based on your age, lab findings, the condition requiring therapy, and how well you tolerate and respond to the medication.

Treatment options, such as Adthyza and armour thyroid, can be discussed with your doctor.

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about Adthyza.

Storage:

Adthyza should be stored between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep Adthyza away from children.

Ingredients

Tetraiodothyronine sodium (T4 levothyroxine) and triiodothyronine sodium (T3 liothyronine) are the active ingredients contained in Adthyza. Calcium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, dextrose, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium starch glycolate are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

You should not take Adthyza if you have diagnosed uncorrected adrenal cortical insufficiency, thyrotoxicosis that is untreated, or are allergic to ingredients contained in Adthyza.

Also, the use of thyroid hormones for obesity has not been justified nor proven effective, either alone or with other therapies, and there’s no substantial evidence supporting their use for treating male or female infertility unless the patient has hypothyroidism.

Cautions

  • Adthyza is associated with the following warning:
    • Medications with thyroid hormone activity, either alone or with other therapies, have been used for treating obesity. However, doses that fall within the daily hormonal requirement range are ineffective for weight loss in patients with a thyroid gland that functions normally. Serious or life-threatening toxicity may occur at greater doses, especially when taken with sympathomimetic amines (i.e., those used for appetite suppression).
  • Before you start taking Adthyza, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • About your past medical history
    • About your current health conditions
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients with cardiovascular issues, including chest pain and elderly patients due to a greater risk of heart disease, should use Adthyza cautiously.
  • Patients with diabetes or adrenal cortical insufficiency should use Adthyza cautiously.
  • Blood tests should be monitored in patients with thyroid problems who are on oral blood thinners, as sensitivity to oral blood thinners can be affected by thyroid issues.

Side Effects

Hyperthyroidism can occur due to therapeutic overdosage of Adthyza. If you are experiencing any other side effects, your doctor should immediately be informed.
