What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Aldara Cream (Imiquimod) is a topical treatment that helps the body's immune system fight certain skin problems. It works by encouraging the immune system to produce natural chemicals that protect the skin. Aldara Cream is useful for treating actinic keratosis, a condition caused by too much sun exposure, especially on the face and scalp. It is also used to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma when surgery isn't the best option, as well as external genital and perianal warts.

Directions

When using Aldara Cream, it's important to follow your doctor's instructions closely. This cream is for topical use only, meaning it should be applied to the skin and not to the mouth, eyes, or sensitive areas. Typically, you'll apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area once daily before bedtime.

How often the medication is applied can vary based on the condition being treated. For example, it might be used two to five times a week for a specified duration. Before applying an Aldara Cream dose, clean and dry the area thoroughly. After application, wash your hands with soap and water to avoid spreading the medication. It's important to leave the cream on for about 8 hours, during which you should avoid showering or bathing. In the morning, cleanse the area with water to remove any remaining cream.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Aldara Cream is Imiquimod.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to Imiquimod or any other ingredient of the cream formulation.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Aldara, make sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Aldara can cause local skin reactions like redness, swelling, weeping, or erosion. If these occur, wash the area with mild soap and water and consult your doctor. Avoid applying Aldara to areas with cuts, burns, infections, or rashes.
  • Do not use Aldara with other imiquimod products on the same treatment area, as this can worsen skin reactions.
  • Severe swelling of the vulva and urinary retention have been reported with Aldara. Stop using the product and contact your doctor if you experience significant swelling.
  • If severe skin reactions occur, your doctor may recommend pausing or stopping Aldara treatment. Follow their guidance carefully.
  • Do not engage in sexual (genital, anal, or oral) contact while Aldara is on your skin.
  • Aldara may cause lightening or complete loss of skin color (hypopigmentation), which may not go away after stopping treatment. Discontinue use and inform your doctor if this occurs.
  • Some people experience flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue, fever, nausea, muscle aches, or chills, while using Aldara. If this happens, pause treatment and contact your doctor.
  • Aldara can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase your risk of sunburn. Avoid direct sunlight and sunlamps, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen during treatment. Do not apply Aldara to sunburned skin.
  • Use Aldara exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Store the medication properly and apply only to the affected area as directed.

Side Effects

The most common side effects occur at the treatment site and include redness, swelling, itching, and burning. Other reactions may involve scabbing, crusting, blistering, peeling, or skin discoloration that may not fully go away. Some people experience flaking, dryness, or thickened skin at the application area. Headaches have also been reported.

Severe skin reactions, such as erosion or vulvar swelling in females, can occur, particularly if applied near sensitive areas like the vaginal opening, potentially causing pain or difficulty urinating. If you experience skin reactions that affect your daily activities or flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, fever, or muscle aches, stop using Aldara Cream and contact your healthcare provider. They may adjust or discontinue your treatment if these side effects persist.
