What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Aldomet is a prescription medication for hypertension treatment. It works to reduce neurotransmitter concentrations in the brain to lower blood pressure and reduce risk of complications like heart problems, stroke, kidney damage, or vision loss from hypertension. Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and is the most serious of hypertension risks. Aldomet takes effect within 4-6 hours and is because it can be sedating for some people it should be taken in the evening.

Directions

50 mg Aldomet taken 2 or 3 times a day in the first 48 hours as indicated in the prescription.

Dosage may be increased or decreased based on your physician’s directions, but intervals should not be less than 48 hours (2 days).

Cautions

Methyldopa may cause anemia (low number of red blood cells) and blood tests may be required before beginning on Aldomet. Periodic blood testing may be required when you are taking the medication too. Stop using Aldomet if treatment causes hemolytic anemia.

Aldomet may not be a fit for patients who have a history of liver disease and should be avoided in patients with active liver disease including acute hepatitis and active cirrhosis. Do not use Aldomet is you are undergoing kidney dialysis.

Aldomet may not be suitable for patients with a history of heart failure.

This medication may cause Edema (water retention causing leg swelling) or weight gain in some patients.

Patients with cerebrovascular disease should not use Aldomet.

Use of Aldomet may lead the patient to required reduced doses of anesthetics during surgical procedures because of the risk of hypotension (low blood pressure).

Interactions

Dug interaction risks exist between Aldomet and certain other Rx medications or health supplements - monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) drugs like isocarboxazid (Marplan) / phenelzine (Nardil) / tranylcypromine (Parnate) / selegiline (Ensam, Elderpryl, Zelapar) / rasagiline (Azilect) / iron supplements like ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate.
