What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Amjevita (adalimumab-atto) is a prescription medication that is injected underneath the skin to treat the following: rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, plaque psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and uveitis.

Amjevita comes in single-dose prefilled syringes and autoinjectors that contain the following concentrations of the medication:

  • Single-dose prefilled syringes:
    • 10 mg/0.2 mL
    • 20 mg/0.2 mL
    • 20 mg/0.4 mL
    • 40 mg/0.4 mL
    • 40 mg/0.8 mL
    • 80 mg/0.8 mL
  • Single-dose prefilled SureClick® autoinjectors:
    • 40 mg/0.4 mL
    • 40 mg/0.8 mL
    • 80 mg/0.8 mL

Directions

Your doctor will decide on an appropriate treatment regimen for you, including an Amjevita dosage, depending on if you are an adult or a pediatric patient, how much you weigh, and the condition you have that needs treatment. You or your caregiver will be provided instructions on how to properly prepare, administer, and discard Amjevita. The medication guide that comes with your prescription contains more detailed information regarding its use.

Inject Amjevita underneath the skin of the thigh or abdomen. Rotate injection sites with each administration. Needles or syringes should not be shared with others.

Storage:

Store Amjevita in its original container; refrigerate Amjevita between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze the medication, and do not use it even if it has been thawed.

Amjevita may be stored at room temperature (do not exceed 77°F, or 25°C) and away from exposure to light for up to 14 days if needed.

Ingredients

Adalimumab-atto is the active ingredient contained in Amjevita. Glacial acetic acid, polysorbate 80, sucrose, and Water for Injection are the inactive ingredients contained in Amjevita. To adjust pH, sodium hydroxide may be added.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications for Amjevita per the most recent Prescribing Information. Treatment options should be discussed between patients and doctors.

Cautions

  • Amjevita is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warnings:
  • The risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis (TB), bacterial sepsis, invasive fungal infections, and other opportunistic infections, that can lead to hospitalization or cause death is increased.
  • If a patient develops an infection or sepsis, Amjevita should be discontinued.
  • Evaluation for latent TB should occur, and treatment should be started in the case of a positive test.
  • Patients should receive TB monitoring during Amjevita treatment.
  • Lymphoma and other cancers that can be fatal have developed in children and adolescents who were treated with TNF-blockers like adalimumab.
  • Adolescents and young adults with inflammatory bowel disease who were treated with TNF-blockers like adalimumab have developed hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of T-cell lymphoma.
  • Before you start treatment with Amjevita, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • About your medical history
    • About your current health conditions
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • The following may be caused by Amjevita:
    • Amjevita has the potential to cause severe infections, including invasive fungal infections. Therefore, if you currently have an infection, it is not recommended to start treatment with Amjevita. In the event of developing an infection during Amjevita treatment, discontinuation may be necessary.
    • An increased cancer risk
    • Serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis
    • Reactivation of hepatitis B. Individuals carrying the virus should undergo monitoring during and for several months following Amjevita therapy. If there is a reactivation of hepatitis B, Amjevita treatment should be stopped and hepatitis B treatment should be initiated.
    • Demyelinating disease that develops or gets worse
    • Decreased red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet levels
    • Heart failure that develops or gets worse
    • Lupus-like syndrome

Side Effects

Some, but not all, side effects associated with Amjevita include infections, injection site reactions, headache, and rash. If you develop bothersome or persistent side effects, immediately notify your doctor.
