Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Antabuse (disulfiram) is used for the management of patients who are chronic alcohol abusers that want to remain sober. Antabuse does not cure alcoholism and should be used in conjunction with appropriate behavioral therapy.
Patients with alcoholism (alcohol use disorder) may have trouble controlling their consumption of alcohol. They may continue to drink even when it causes harm to their health, relationships, and occupation. Antabuse (disulfiram), when taken as directed, causes an uncomfortable reaction when alcohol is consumed concurrently.
Even small amounts of alcohol may cause blurred vision, confusion, headache, flushing, sweating, weakness, vomiting, and other uncomfortable effects. These effects work to deter a person from the consumption of alcohol.
Take 500 mg once daily for 1 to 2 weeks as directed by your physician. Thereafter, the dose is usually reduced to 250 mg once daily but can range from Antabuse 125 mg to Antabuse 500 mg once daily.
The active ingredient in Antabuse is disulfiram.
Inactive ingredients include anhydrous lactose, cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, and stearic acid.
Those with a history of dermatitis after contact with rubber should be evaluated for hypersensitivity prior to taking Antabuse.
Antabuse has been known to cause liver damage and failure. Liver function should be evaluated before and during therapy.
Disulfiram-like reactions may occur with incidental exposure to alcohol, including cough syrups or other alcohol-containing products.
Antabuse should not be used in patients with the following conditions: cerebral damage, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, hepatic cirrhosis, and nephritis.
