What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide) extended-release tablets, available with a valid prescription, are used for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Aplenzin comes in extended-release oral tablets of the following strengths:

  • 174 mg
  • 348 mg
  • 522 mg

Directions

Aplenzin is an antidepressant and should be taken as your doctor has directed. Your doctor will determine your treatment plan. An appropriate Aplenzin dosage will be decided by your doctor based on your diagnosis and how well your kidneys and liver are functioning.

Aplenzin tablets should be stored at 25°C (77°F).

Ingredients

Bupropion hydrobromide is the active ingredient in Aplenzin.

Glyceryl behenate, polyvinyl alcohol, ethylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, dibutyl sebacate, and povidone are the inactive ingredients. Carnauba wax is also a component of the 174 mg and 348 mg tablets.

Contraindications

Patients who have any of the following conditions should not take Aplenzin:

  • Seizure disorder
  • Current or any history of bulimia or anorexia nervosa diagnosis
  • Known allergy to any of Aplenzin’s ingredients

Patients undergoing sudden discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or antiepileptic drugs should not take Aplenzin.

Aplenzin should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) aimed to treat psychiatric disorders or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI aimed to treat psychiatric disorders.

Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start Aplenzin.

Cautions

  • Aplenzin is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Children, adolescents, and young adults receiving antidepressants are at increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior. The development and worsening of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in patients should be monitored.
  • Before you start taking Aplenzin, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Any allergies you have
    • Your current health issues
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • While taking Aplenzin, note the following warnings and precautions:
    • Neuropsychiatric adverse events that have occurred while quitting smoking include mood changes, paranoia, delusions, psychosis, hallucinations, homicidal ideation, aggression, hostility, agitation, anxiety, panic, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and suicide. Patients who are taking Aplenzin in the process of quitting smoking should be monitored for these adverse events. Contact a healthcare provider right away if you experience any of these events.
    • Seizure risk that is dose-related
    • High blood pressure
    • Patients should be screened for bipolar disorder and monitored for symptoms of mania/hypomania.
    • Patients should be advised to contact a healthcare provider right away if they experience psychosis or any other neuropsychiatric reaction.
    • Angle-closure glaucoma

Side Effects

Aplenzin side effects include but are not limited to dry mouth, trouble sleeping, nausea, dizziness, sore throat, anxiety, tremor, palpitation, abdominal pain, agitation, sweating, urinary frequency, ringing of the ears, muscle pain, anorexia, and rash.

Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
