What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Arthrotec is a medication used to help relieve pain and discomfort from different types of arthritis, like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It contains two main ingredients: Diclofenac, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain and swelling, and Misoprostol, which helps protect the stomach from damage that NSAIDs can sometimes cause. Doctors usually prescribe Arthrotec for people who are at a higher risk of developing stomach ulcers or have had problems with ulcers in the past. Patients typically take Arthrotec by mouth, and it comes in two common strengths: one with 50 mg of Diclofenac and 200 mcg of Misoprostol, and another with 75 mg of Diclofenac and 200 mcg of Misoprostol.

Directions

Arthrotec should be taken with caution, using the lowest effective dosage for the shortest duration to meet individual treatment goals. For osteoarthritis, the recommended dosage is one tablet (50 mg Diclofenac and 200 mcg Misoprostol) three times daily, not exceeding 150 mg of Diclofenac per day. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, one tablet can be taken three to four times daily, with a maximum of 200 mg of Diclofenac allowed per day. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, crush, or split it.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Arthrotec are Diclofenac and Misoprostol.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Pregnancy: Taking Arthrotec can harm both the pregnant individual and the fetus, leading to risks such as uterine rupture or premature birth.
  • Allergy to ingredients: If you are allergic to Diclofenac, Misoprostol, or any other components of Arthrotec, do not take this medication.
  • History of asthma: Those who experience asthma attacks, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs should avoid Arthrotec.
  • Active gastrointestinal bleeding: Arthrotec can worsen existing GI bleeding.
  • Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG): People with recent CABG surgery should not take Arthrotec.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with the Arthrotec, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Arthrotec contains Misoprostol, which can cause serious pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, and uterine rupture. This medication should not be used by pregnant women or those who may become pregnant. Women of childbearing potential should use effective birth control while taking Arthrotec.
  • Arthrotec contains Diclofenac, an NSAID that may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events, even in people without prior heart conditions. The risk is higher with prolonged use or higher doses. If you have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure, consult your doctor before using this medication.
  • NSAIDs like Diclofenac can cause serious stomach and intestinal problems, including ulcers, bleeding, and perforation. These complications can occur without warning and may be fatal. The risk is higher in older adults, those with a history of ulcers, or those taking blood thinners, steroids, or alcohol.
  • Arthrotec can cause liver problems, including severe hepatitis and liver failure. Symptoms of liver damage include nausea, fatigue, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and abdominal pain. Regular liver function tests are recommended, especially if you have a history of liver disease.
  • Long-term use of Arthrotec may lead to kidney damage or failure, particularly in people with existing kidney disease, heart failure, dehydration, or those taking diuretics. Monitor kidney function regularly and stay hydrated while on this medication.
  • NSAIDs can raise blood pressure and cause fluid retention, leading to swelling and worsening heart failure. If you have high blood pressure or heart disease, talk to your doctor before taking Arthrotec.
  • Arthrotec can increase the risk of bleeding, especially in people taking blood thinners, aspirin, or certain antidepressants (SSRIs and SNRIs). If you notice unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding, or black stools, contact your doctor.
  • Because Arthrotec reduces pain and inflammation, it may hide signs of an infection, making diagnosis more difficult. Let your doctor know if you have a fever or other symptoms of infection while taking this medication.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Arthrotec include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Other digestive issues, such as flatulence and indigestion, may also occur. Some patients experience dizziness, headaches, or fatigue. These side effects are usually mild and improve with continued use.

Arthrotec may cause severe gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney problems, or cardiovascular events, including heart attack or stroke. Some people develop allergic reactions, liver toxicity, or skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Women may experience menstrual irregularities, vaginal bleeding, or uterine cramping. If you have symptoms like chest pain, black stools, trouble breathing, or severe rash, seek medical attention immediately.
