What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Atacand HCT is a medication that combines two drugs: Candesartan Cilexetil and Hydrochlorothiazide. Candesartan Cilexetil helps relax the blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow and the heart to work better. Hydrochlorothiazide helps the body get rid of extra salt and water by affecting how the kidneys filter fluids. Doctors often prescribe Atacand HCT to treat high blood pressure (also known as hypertension). Managing high blood pressure is important because it can help prevent serious health issues like strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Directions

Atacand HCT is a medication you take by mouth, usually once per day. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully. The usual starting dosage for adults is 16 mg of Candesartan and 12.5 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide per day. If your blood pressure doesn't lower enough after a few weeks, your doctor may increase the dose. Try to take the medication at the same time each day to keep the amount steady in your body. When you start taking Atacand HCT, it's important to check your blood pressure and kidney health regularly.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Atacand HCT are Candesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Atacand HCT if you have a history of the following:

  • Allergy to Candesartan or Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Inability to produce urine (anuria)
  • Concurrent use with Aliskiren with a diagnosis of diabetes

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Atacand HCT, make sure to tell your healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Atacand HCT can harm an unborn baby when taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. It may cause serious complications like reduced kidney function, underdeveloped lungs, and even death. If you're pregnant or become pregnant while on this medication, stop taking it and talk to your doctor immediately.
  • Atacand HCT can cause low blood pressure, especially in people who are dehydrated, on dialysis, or have been taking diuretics for a long time. Symptoms may include dizziness, fainting, or feeling weak.
  • Atacand HCT can affect kidney function, especially in people with pre-existing kidney issues or severe heart failure. Regular kidney function tests are recommended while taking this medication. Contact your doctor if you notice symptoms like reduced urination or swelling.
  • This medication can cause changes in potassium, sodium, or magnesium levels in your body, which might lead to complications like muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or fatigue. Routine blood tests can help monitor these levels.
  • In rare cases, Atacand HCT can cause acute eye problems, such as blurry vision or glaucoma, which may happen shortly after starting the medication. If you experience sudden eye pain or vision changes, stop the medication and seek medical help immediately.
  • Atacand HCT may affect blood sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid levels. This could increase the risk of diabetes, gout, or other metabolic issues. Patients with conditions like hypercalcemia (high calcium levels) or lupus should use this medication with caution, as it might worsen these conditions.

Side Effects

The most common Atacand HCT side effects include dizziness, upper respiratory infections, and back pain. Some people may also experience flu-like symptoms or mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea or abdominal cramping. These side effects are generally mild and may improve over time.

Atacand HCT may cause more serious side effects, such as angioedema, liver problems, or changes in blood cell counts like neutropenia or leukopenia. Rarely, severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis have been reported. Long-term use of Hydrochlorothiazide has been linked to a slightly increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer, particularly in fair-skinned individuals. If you experience symptoms like severe rash, breathing difficulties, or unusual swelling, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
