Atarax (Hydroxyzine)

Description

Atarax, known generically as Hydroxyzine, is a medication with antihistamine properties. It effectively targets and blocks the activity of histamine, a substance in the body that triggers allergic symptoms. Because of its various effects, Hydroxyzine is commonly prescribed to treat conditions such as anxiety and tension. In addition to easing anxiety and managing emotional stress, it may also help reduce itching from allergic reactions and can be used to promote sedation before surgical procedures.

Directions

Atarax should be taken exactly as a healthcare provider prescribes. For adults living with anxiety and tension, the usual Atarax dosage is between 50 and 100 mg four times a day. For children under six years old, the typical dose is 50 mg daily, split into divided doses throughout the day. Children over six may take between 50 and 100 mg daily, also in divided doses. The dosage of the medication may be changed based on response to the treatment.

Avoid taking Atarax if any of the following apply:

• Known allergy to Hydroxyzine or any component of the formulation
• Pregnancy, especially early pregnancy due to lack of adequate safety data

Cautions

• Before using Atarax, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
• Any existing health conditions
• Any allergies
• A list of all medications you are currently taking
• Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Atarax can cause drowsiness, so you should avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing anything that requires full attention until you know how the medication affects you. Alcohol and other sedating drugs, such as pain relievers and sleep aids, can increase drowsiness and should be avoided or used with caution.
• Atarax can increase the effects of other drugs that slow down the nervous system, including narcotics, non-narcotic pain relievers, and barbiturates. If you take any of these medications, your doctor may need to adjust the dosage to prevent excessive sedation or other side effects.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to Atarax, as they are more likely to have reduced liver, kidney, or heart function. Lower doses are usually recommended, and elderly patients should be monitored closely for confusion or excessive sedation.
• It is not known if Atarax passes into breast milk, but since many drugs do, nursing mothers should not take this medication to avoid potential risks to the baby.
• The tablet form of Atarax may be manufactured using a substance that can harm public health and the environment by affecting the ozone layer.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Atarax include drowsiness and dry mouth. Drowsiness is usually temporary and may lessen with continued use or a dose adjustment. Some people may also experience mild dizziness or fatigue. These side effects are generally mild and do not require stopping the medication.

Although rare, Atarax may cause involuntary motor activity such as tremors or, in very high doses, convulsions. Unlike some sedating medications, it has not been associated with significant respiratory depression at recommended doses. If you experience severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, or unusual muscle movements, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
