What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Atelvia, known by its scientific name as risedronate sodium, is a bisphosphonate that doctors prescribe to treat osteoporosis. This medication blocks the action of osteoclasts, cells that break down bone, which in turn maintains bone density and strength. It's primarily used in postmenopausal women to prevent bone thinning.

Directions

Atelvia should be taken as recommended by a healthcare provider. Patients typically consume 35 milligrams once a week, right after breakfast. It's important to drink at least 4 ounces of plain water with the tablet and not to eat or drink anything else for at least 30 minutes afterward. To ensure the medication is fully absorbed, remain upright—do not lie down—for at least 30 minutes post-ingestion. The tablet must be swallowed whole, without chewing, crushing, or sucking to avoid potential irritation to the esophagus.

Ingredients

Risedronate Sodium is the active ingredient in Atelvia.

Contraindications

Certain conditions may increase the risk of adverse effects or make the medication less effective. It's crucial to consult a healthcare professional if any of these contraindications apply:

  • Hypersensitivity: Individuals with a known allergy to risedronate or any components of the Atelvia tablet should not take this medication.
  • Esophageal abnormalities: Those with abnormalities in the esophagus, which can include strictures or achalasia, are advised against using Atelvia due to the risk of esophageal irritation.
  • Inability to stand or sit upright for 30 minutes: The tablet must be taken with a full glass of water, with the patient remaining upright for at least half an hour to prevent esophageal irritation.
  • Low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia): Correct hypocalcemia before starting therapy, as Atelvia may worsen this condition.

Cautions

  • Before initiating treatment with Atelvia, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Don't take Atelvia if you're already using Actonel, as they contain the same active ingredient.
  • If you have any upper stomach issues like Barrett’s esophagus, swallowing problems, gastritis, or ulcers, use Atelvia with caution. It could make these conditions worse.
  • It’s important to take Atelvia exactly as instructed. Make sure to drink a full glass of water with it and don’t lie down right after taking it to avoid irritation to your esophagus.
  • If you start having swallowing difficulties, chest pain, or new or worsening heartburn, stop taking Atelvia and see your doctor right away.
  • Ensure you have enough calcium and vitamin D, and consider supplements if your intake is low.
  • Be aware of the risk of jaw bone problems, especially if you’re having dental work done. Discuss this with your doctor before any surgeries.
  • If you develop severe pain in your bones, joints, or muscles, consider stopping Atelvia and talk to your doctor.
  • Watch for any thigh or groin pain as this could indicate a rare type of thigh bone fracture.
  • If you have severe kidney problems, Atelvia might not be the best choice for you.
  • Remember, this medication can interfere with certain bone-imaging tests.

Side Effects

Atelvia side effects may include diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, muscle, back, and joint pain, upset stomach, and abdominal pain. These symptoms are typically mild and often manageable.

However, Atelvia can also lead to more severe problems. It may cause complications in the esophagus, such as irritation or ulcers, which emphasize the importance of following the prescribed dosage closely. Low blood calcium, a significant concern, might develop as muscle spasms or tingling. If you notice these, immediate medical consultation is recommended. Other serious side effects include osteonecrosis of the jaw, severe musculoskeletal pain, and unusual thigh bone fractures. Report any new or worsening symptoms, especially related to pain or swallowing difficulties, to your healthcare provider right away to address these issues promptly.
