What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Aviane is a combined oral contraceptive (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) used to prevent pregnancy in women who want to use oral contraceptives as their method of contraception.

Aviane is supplied in a 21-day regimen or 28-day regimen pack of tablets for oral administration.

Directions

Aviane should be taken as your doctor has prescribed. The information that comes with your prescription should be carefully read. Any questions or concerns may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Ingredients

0.10 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol are contained in the 21 orange tablets. FD&C yellow no. 6 aluminum lake, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized corn starch, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide are the inactive ingredients.

D&C yellow no. 10 aluminum lake, FD&C blue no. 1 aluminum lake, FD&C yellow no. 6 aluminum lake, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and pregelatinized corn starch are the ingredients in the light green, inert tablets.

Contraindications

Aviane should be avoided in women with any of the following:

  • Blood clots or blood clotting problems
  • A history of blood clots or blood clotting problems
  • Current or previous cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease
  • Vascular heart disease with complications from blood clots
  • Heart arrhythmias with blood clotting problems
  • Hereditary or acquired condition that causes easy blood clotting
  • Major surgery that results in prolonged immobilization
  • Diabetes involving vascular conditions
  • Headaches that result in focal neurological symptoms
  • High blood pressure that is not controlled
  • Current or previous breast cancer
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding that is not diagnosed
  • Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice before using Aviane
  • Liver tumors, liver cancer, or liver disease
  • Pregnancy or suspicion of pregnancy
  • Allergic to any of the ingredients in Aviane

In addition, Aviane should be avoided in women who are taking hepatitis C medications that contain ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir.

Cautions

  • The following Boxed Warning is associated with Aviane:
    • Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels when also taking oral contraceptives. The risk increases with age and with smoking 15 cigarettes or more a day. Women who are at least 35 years old are especially at risk. Women who take oral contraceptives should not smoke.

Before you start receiving Aviane, inform your doctor of:

  • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
  • Your allergies
  • Your current health problems
  • Your past medical history
  • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • The risk of heart attack, blood clots, cerebrovascular diseases, breast cancer, and cervical cancer may be increased with oral contraceptive use.
  • Liver tumors and vision problems and worsening gallbladder disease can be caused by oral contraceptive use.
  • Taking Aviane with hepatitis C regimens that contain ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir can cause an elevation in liver enzymes. Therefore, Aviane should be discontinued before starting hepatitis C treatment with these medications. Aviane may be resumed 2 weeks after hepatitis C treatment completion.
  • Glucose intolerance, lipid disorders, and high blood pressure can be caused by oral contraceptive use.
  • Headaches or migraines may occur or worsen with oral contraceptive use.
  • Breakthrough bleeding, spotting, or abnormal menstrual periods can occur with oral contraceptive use.
  • Ectopic pregnancy and intrauterine pregnancy may occur in contraceptive failures.
  • Oral contraceptives do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV (AIDS).

Side Effects

Aviane side effects include, but are not limited to, acne, abnormal menstruation, breast changes, intolerance to contact lenses, vision problems, nausea, mood changes, and weight changes. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop worrisome or persistent side effects.
