Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Avodart (dutasteride) is a medication prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a condition where the prostate enlarges, typically in older men, and the enlarged prostate causes problems like urinary retention, frequent urinary, and the inability to empty the bladder.
As men age, testosterone begins to largely convert to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a primary chemical signal responsible for causing the prostate to enlarge. The enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT is called 5-alpha-reductase. Avodart works by blocking the action of 5-alpha-reductase, preventing testosterone from being converted into DHT.
By decreasing the conversion of DHT, Avodart can treat and prevent the symptoms of BPH.
The normal AVODART dosage is 0.5 mg once daily. When taken together with tamsulosin, the normal AVODART dosage is also 0.5 mg once daily.
The AVODART capsule should not be split or broken. Swallow the capsule whole and take it with or without food.
The active ingredient and name of AVODART and AVODART genericis dutasteride.
AVODART may decrease the total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in blood serum, so levels of PSA should be measured before and during AVODART treatment. Since PSA is an important marker for prostate cancer, a new baseline must be established after starting AVODART.
Women of childbearing age and women who are pregnant should not handle AVODART because it can cause birth defects.
Do not donate blood for at least six months after stopping AVODART.
Some of the most common side effects that can happen with AVODART include:
Not everyone who takes AVODART will experience these side effects, but these are some of the most common. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist for a full list of side effects.
