What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Directions

Bactrim should be taken as your doctor prescribes. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns. The full course of treatment needs to be completed, regardless of improvement of symptoms.

Your doctor will tell you how much medication you should take and for how long, depending on the infection being treated and your health conditions.

Ingredients

The active ingredients contained in Bactrim are trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.

Contraindications

Bactrim should not be taken by patients with any of the following:

  • Are allergic to sulfonamides or to any of the ingredients in Bactrim
  • Two-month-old or younger babies
  • Reduced kidney function (CrCl <15 mL/min)
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Pregnant women at term and breastfeeding
  • History of immune thrombocytopenia (decreased platelet count) induced by trimethoprim and/or sulfonamides
  • Use of dofetilide

Cautions

  • Before you begin taking Bactrim, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • Your medical history
    • Your current health conditions
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Bactrim can cause severe low sodium levels in the blood.
  • Bactrim can cause high potassium levels in the blood.
  • Bactrim can cause the following severe and potentially life-threatening reactions: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) and acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis (AFND), fulminant liver necrosis, abnormal white blood cell counts, aplastic anemia, and other blood disorders. If you develop a rash or other severe reaction, speak to your doctor right away.
  • Bactrim can cause acute and delayed lung damage, anaphylaxis, and circulatory shock.
  • Bactrim can cause severe pulmonary reactions.
  • Bactrim should be used cautiously by elderly patients because of the risk of bone marrow suppression.
  • Bactrim can cause Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
  • Superinfection can occur with long-term or inappropriate use of Bactrim.
  • Patients with kidney or liver problems, possible folate deficiency, porphyria, thyroid problems, and severe allergies or asthma should exercise caution when taking Bactrim.
  • Although rare, low blood sugar can occur in patients without diabetes.
  • The metabolism of phenylalanine may be affected by trimethoprim.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, Bactrim side effects include anorexia, vomiting, vertigo, seizure, rash, hives, abnormal white blood cell counts, sulfite sensitivity, and abnormal electrolyte levels. If you develop troublesome or persistent side effects, immediately speak to your doctor.
