  • Products must be new. We cannot match the price of any used, short expiry or expired product.

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

  • Atopic dermatitis (including infantile atopic dermatitis)
  • Nummular dermatitis (discoid eczema)

Directions

Betnovate should be used as directed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

A thin layer of cream or ointment should be applied and gently rubbed into the affected area(s) one or two times per day for up to four weeks. Your doctor can tell you if you need to cover or occlude the area being treated. If your condition worsens or does not improve within two to four weeks of receiving treatment, contact your doctor.

If using Betnovate Scalp Application, a small amount should be applied to the scalp in the morning and at night until improvement is seen. If your condition worsens or does not improve, contact your doctor.

Store Betnovate products below 25°C (77°F).

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Betnovate is the corticosteroid betamethasone. Liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin are the inactive ingredients included in the cream and ointment. Carbomer, isopropyl alcohol, sodium hydroxide, and purified water are the excipients in Betnovate Scalp Application.

Contraindications

Do not use Betnovate cream or ointment if you have any of the following:

  • An allergy to any of Betnovate’s ingredients or excipients
  • Cutaneous infections that are untreated
  • Rosacea
  • Acne
  • Itching without inflammation
  • Perianal and genital itching
  • Perioral dermatitis

Do not use Betnovate Scalp Application if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or excipients or if you have an infection of the scalp. In addition, do not use Betnovate Scalp Application in children younger than one years old.

Cautions

  • Before you begin treatment with Betnovate, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you use, including lotions, ointments, creams, or topical solutions
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Betnovate should be cautiously used if you have ever had local hypersensitivity to previous corticosteroid use.
  • Increased systemic absorption of topical steroids can cause hypercortisolism (Cushing’s syndrome) and reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression. Steroid potency and formulation, exposure duration, surface area application, use on occluded skin areas, skin hydration, use on thin or broken skin, age, and weight can affect systemic absorption.
  • Betnovate use should not exceed five days in infants and children younger than 12 years of age. In addition, occlusion should not be used.
  • Clean the skin before applying a new dressing when using occlusive dressings.
  • Betnovate should be used with caution in patients with psoriasis.
  • Application to the face should not exceed five days, and occlusion should not be used.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes.
  • Vision disturbances can occur.
  • Betnovate should be stopped if a skin lesion is infected.
  • Using Betnovate for treating skin problems around leg ulcers can result in local hypersensitivity reactions and infection.
  • Betnovate contains flammable contents. Avoid smoking or going near flames.
  • Chlorocresol in Betnovate can cause an allergic reaction in some people. In addition, the cetostearyl alcohol in Betnovate can cause local skin reactions in some people.
  • Discontinuing Betnovate after prolonged use or inappropriate use can result in rebound flares.

Side Effects

Common Betnovate side effects include itching, local skin burning, and skin pain. Call your doctor immediately if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
