You or your caregiver should receive instructions on the proper storage, preparation, administration, and disposal of Betaseron by a healthcare professional. Betaseron is administered via a subcutaneous injection (underneath the skin) of the abdomen, thigh, upper back of the arm, or buttock. Be sure to rotate injection sites with each injection.

Interferon beta-1b is the active ingredient in Betaseron.
Albumin (human), mannitol, and sodium chloride solution (contained in the diluent) are the inactive ingredients.
Betaseron injection should not be administered to patients who are allergic to natural or recombinant interferon beta, albumin, or mannitol.
Betaseron side effects include but are not limited to reactions at the injection site; reduced lymphocyte, leukocyte, and neutrophil counts; flu-like symptoms; muscle pain; elevated liver enzymes; headache; muscle tension increase; pain; rash; sleep problems; stomach pain; and weakness.
