What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Ophthalmic betaxolol is a prescription medication used for treating glaucoma, a condition in which the pressure in the eye is elevated, gradually leading to vision loss.

Ophthalmic betaxolol is available as an eye drop.

Directions

Betaxolol eye drops should be used as directed by your doctor. Refer any questions or concerns about the medication to your doctor or pharmacist.

Ophthalmic betaxolol is generally used twice daily. Be sure to wash your hands before and after you instill the drops.

If you are using other topical eye products, wait at least 10 minutes before you use betaxolol eye drops.

Avoid touching the tip of the container to any surface.

Store betaxolol eye drops at room temperature and out of reach of children.

Ingredients

The beta-blocker betaxolol is contained in ophthalmic betaxolol.

Contraindications

Patients with any of the following should not use betaxolol eye drops:

  • an allergy to betaxolol
  • sinus bradycardia
  • heart block greater than first degree
  • cardiogenic shock
  • heart failure

Cautions

  • Before you start use ophthalmic betaxolol, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications and other eye products
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients with diabetes should use caution when using betaxolol eye drops. The medication can mask signs and symptoms of low blood glucose levels.
  • The clinical signs of hyperthyroidism can be masked by betaxolol.
  • Inform your doctor of ophthalmic betaxolol use before you have surgery or a procedure.
  • Betaxolol eye drop use may cause the same adverse effects associated with systemic use of beta-blockers.

Side Effects

Ophthalmic betaxolol side effects include eye discomfort. Immediately call your doctor if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
