What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

BETOPTIC-S (betaxolol) ophthalmic solution is a medication used to treat intraocular pressure in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. BETOPTIC-S belongs to the drug class beta-blocker, and it works by blocking the effects of adrenergic neurotransmitters that activate beta-1 receptors. By blocking these receptors, BETOPTIC-S decreases the production of aqueous humor, relieving high pressure and symptoms of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the slow degeneration of optic nerves that can lead to permanent vision loss. One of the risk factors for glaucoma progression is elevated intraocular pressure, which BETOPTIC-S is often prescribed to treat.

Directions

Instill one to two drops of BETOPTIC-S ophthalmic solution to the affected eye twice daily.

The bottle should be shaken well before each use. The full effects of the medication may take several weeks to begin working in some patients.

Separate the administration of BETOPTIC-S from other eye medications by at least 10 minutes. BETOPTIC-S can be used in patients that use contact lenses.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in BETOPTIC-S is betaxolol 0.5%

Inactive ingredients include benzalkonium chloride, EDTA, hydrochloric acid (for pH balance), sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide (for pH balance).

Cautions

Care should be taken to avoid touching the tip of the eyedropper to the surface of the eye or another nonsterile surface. Doing so may contaminate the medication with bacterial growth. If the product is contaminated it should be thrown out as it can cause infection.

Beta-blockers like betaxolol do not have a high rate of systemic absorption, but in rare cases may cause systemic side effects that include cardiovascular, endocrine (diabetes), thyroid, and pulmonary side effects.

Side Effects

Common BETOPTIC-S side effects may include:

  • Anisocoria
  • Blurred vision
  • Corneal punctate staining
  • Crusty lashes
  • Decreased corneal sensitivity
  • Discharge
  • Edema
  • Erythema
  • Eye dryness
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Inflammation
  • Itching sensation
  • Keratitis
  • Ocular discomfort
  • Ocular pain
  • Photophobia

Most patients will not experience any side effects from BETOPTIC-S, but tell your prescriber if you experience any of the above.
