What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Bicillin C-R (penicillin G benzathine and penicillin G procaine injectable suspension) is an antimicrobial that is administered intramuscularly for treating or preventing bacterial infections that are susceptible to the medication.

Bicillin C-R is supplied in a disposable, single-use syringe.

Your Bicillin C-R dosage will be determined by your doctor. Bicillin C-R will be injected into the muscle of the buttocks or hip by your doctor or other healthcare provider.

Ingredients

Ingredients in Bicillin C-R include penicillin G, penicillin benzathine, sodium citrate buffer; and as w/v, approximately 0.5% lecithin, 0.55% carboxymethylcellulose, 0.55% povidone, 0.1% methylparaben, and 0.01% propylparaben.

Contraindications

Patients with an allergy to penicillin or procaine should not receive Bicillin C-R.

Cautions

Bicillin C-R has the following FDA Boxed Warning:

  • Bicillin C-R should not be administered into a vein or mixed with other intravenous solutions. Bicillin C-R has been inadvertently administered intravenously, which has been associated with cardiorespiratory arrest and death.
    • Before you start treatment with Bicillin C-R, inform your doctor of:
      • All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health conditions
      • Your past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Bicillin C-R may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. The risk is increased in patients with a penicillin allergy or sensitivity to multiple allergens. Emergency treatment should be initiated right away if a patient has a severe allergic reaction.
    • Bicillin C-R may cause severe cutaneous reactions. If a patient develops skin problems, they should seek medical care right away.
    • Bicillin C-R may cause methemoglobinemia. Patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia, and cardiac or pulmonary compromise, infants younger than 6 months old, and patients exposed to oxidizing agents or their metabolites while being treated with Bicillin C-R are at increased risk. A patient’s skin may appear blue if this condition develops, and they should seek emergent medical care, as seizures, coma, arrhythmias, and even death can also occur.
  • Bicillin C-R may cause Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) associated with diarrhea. Patients should contact their doctor if they experience diarrhea.

Side Effects

Bicillin C-R side effects include, but are not limited to, hypersensitivity reactions, gastrointestinal conditions, anemia, abnormal blood cell counts, injection site reactions, sweating, blurred vision, and kidney problems. Inform your doctor right away of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
