What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Contraindications

Birth control pills should not be administered to patients with any of the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure that is uncontrolled
  • Heart disease, coronary artery disease, or circulation problems (especially if diabetic)
  • Vaginal bleeding that is not diagnosed
  • Liver disease or cancer
  • Migraines that are severe
  • Are receiving treatment with certain hepatitis C medications
  • You will be undergoing major surgery
  • You smoke and are older than 35
  • Have had a stroke, heart attack, or a blood clot
  • Have had jaundice associated with pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Cancer of the breast, uterus, cervix, or vagina

Cautions

  • The risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from oral contraceptives, such as stroke, heart attack, and blood clot, is increased by smoking cigarettes, especially if you are older than 35.
  • Before you begin Brevicon, inform your doctor of:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Birth control pills do not protect against HIV infections or other sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms are recommended for protection.

Side Effects

Brevicon side effects may include but are not limited to stroke; heart attack; blood clots; high blood pressure; liver problems; nausea; vomiting; breast tenderness or changes; breakthrough bleeding; depression or other mood changes; swelling in the ankles, feet, or hands; headache; and intolerance to contact lenses.

Immediately contact your doctor if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
