What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Brukinsa (Zanubrutinib) is a type of cancer treatment that targets specific proteins to help stop the growth of cancer cells. It works by blocking a protein called Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK), which is important for the survival of certain blood cancers. This medication is used to treat various conditions, including mantle cell lymphoma, Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Different patients may respond in different ways to the treatment, but its goal is to help manage these types of cancer effectively.

Directions

Brukinsa is taken orally, usually as 160 mg twice daily or 320 mg once daily. Swallow capsules whole with water and do not break or chew them. Brukinsa can be taken with or without food. It's important to follow the prescription label closely and consult a healthcare provider with any questions or concerns.

Ingredients

Zanubrutinib is the active ingredient in Brukinsa.

Contraindications

There are no particular contraindications mentioned on the medication label. Nonetheless, it is recommended to refrain from using this drug if you have a known allergy to Zanubrutinib or any of the drug’s ingredients.

Cautions

  • Before using Brukinsa, make sure you provide your healthcare provider with the following information:
    • Existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A list of all the medications you are currently taking
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Brukinsa can cause fatal or serious bleeding, including in the brain or gastrointestinal system. Bleeding can occur even if you're not taking blood thinners. If you notice signs of bleeding, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately. You may need to pause treatment before surgery to reduce bleeding risks.
  • Brukinsa may lead to severe infections, including pneumonia, and can sometimes be fatal. Infections like hepatitis B reactivation have also been reported. Preventive treatment may be needed if you are at high risk. Monitor for fever or infection symptoms and seek medical attention right away if they occur.
  • Treatment with Brukinsa can result in low levels of neutrophils, platelets, and red blood cells, which could become severe. Your doctor will monitor your blood regularly and adjust the treatment if necessary. Medications or blood transfusions may be needed.
  • Brukinsa may increase the risk of other cancers, especially non-melanoma skin cancer. Regular monitoring and protecting yourself from sun exposure are important.
  • Heart issues like atrial fibrillation and flutter have been reported in patients taking Brukinsa. If you have heart conditions or other risk factors, watch for symptoms like dizziness, palpitations, or shortness of breath, and contact your doctor if these occur.
  • Brukinsa may cause severe liver injury. Your liver function will be checked before and during treatment. If liver damage is suspected, Brukinsa may need to be paused or discontinued.
  • Brukinsa can harm an unborn baby. Women should avoid becoming pregnant while on Brukinsa and for one week after the last dose. Men should also avoid fathering a child during treatment and for one week after stopping Brukinsa.

Side Effects

The most common Brukinsa side effects include a decrease in white blood cells and platelets, which may increase your risk of infection or bleeding. Other frequent side effects include upper respiratory tract infections and muscle, bone, or joint pain. While these effects are often mild, it’s important to let your healthcare provider know if they persist or worsen.

Brukinsa can lead to serious side effects such as severe bleeding, which could be life-threatening. Signs of serious bleeding include blood in your stool or urine, vomiting blood, or unexpected bruising. Additionally, Brukinsa may cause serious infections, heart rhythm problems, and liver issues. If you experience fever, dizziness, chest discomfort, or yellowing of your skin or eyes, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
