What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Buspirone, commonly known by the brand name Buspar, is a medication prescribed to manage anxiety disorders. It works by affecting the brain's chemicals that may become unbalanced due to anxiety. Classified as an anxiolytic, Buspirone is distinct from benzodiazepines and is not intended for the everyday stress most people experience. Instead, it is meant to relieve symptoms of anxiety, which can include fear, tension, irritability, and physical symptoms like dizziness or a pounding heartbeat.

Directions

Buspar should be taken exactly as prescribed. Typically, adults start with a dosage of 7.5 mg twice per day. The medication can be increased every two to three days but usually should not exceed 60 mg per day. It's important to take Buspirone consistently, either always with food or always on an empty stomach. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double up doses. Be aware that the full effect of Buspar might not be felt for a few weeks.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Buspar is Buspirone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if you have had a previous hypersensitive response to Buspirone Hydrochloride.

Cautions

  • Before taking Buspar, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Buspar should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a type of antidepressant, as this combination can lead to dangerously high blood pressure. If you are taking an MAOI, speak with your doctor before starting Buspar.
  • Buspar is not an antipsychotic and should not be used as a replacement for medications used to treat schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders.
  • While Buspar is generally less sedating than other anxiety medications, it can still cause drowsiness or dizziness in some people. Until you know how it affects you, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Although studies suggest Buspar does not worsen alcohol-induced impairment, it is best to avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication.
  • Buspar does not work like benzodiazepines or other sedatives, so it will not prevent withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop taking those types of medications. If you are switching from another anxiety medication, your doctor may recommend gradually tapering off the previous drug before starting Buspar.
  • In rare cases, Buspar may cause restlessness, muscle tension, or a jittery feeling, particularly when starting the medication. This could be due to its effects on the nervous system, including its interaction with dopamine receptors. If these symptoms persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Buspar include dizziness, nausea, headache, nervousness, and lightheadedness. Some people may also experience drowsiness, dry mouth, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Excitement and agitation have been reported in some cases. These effects are generally mild and may improve over time with continued use.

Buspar may cause more serious effects such as confusion, trouble concentrating, or mood changes, including increased anxiety or depression. In rare cases, some people have reported involuntary muscle movements, vision changes, or symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Some individuals may experience heart-related effects, such as palpitations or changes in blood pressure. If you develop severe dizziness, tremors, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.
