A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Cabenuva comprises two medications: Cabotegravir and Rilpivirine, both essential in treating human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Cabotegravir acts as an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), blocking the virus's ability to integrate its genetic material into human DNA, a crucial step in its replication process. On the other hand, Rilpivirine is categorized as a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), disrupting a different stage of HIV replication by targeting the reverse transcriptase enzyme. Together, they provide a long-acting injectable form that serves as a maintenance option for HIV-1 infection.
Patients may receive the initial injections of Cabotegravir 600 mg and Rilpivirine 900 mg on the same day at the end of an oral lead-in period, if applicable, to confirm the tolerability of the medications. The standard Cabenuva dosing schedule involves once-monthly injections, although patients may choose once-every-two-months as an alternative schedule with their healthcare provider's guidance.
The injections are given directly into the muscle of the buttocks by a healthcare provider. It is important for patients to understand the importance of sticking to their dosing schedule, as consistent administration is key for sustaining the treatment's effectiveness.
Cabotegravir and Rilpivirine are the two active ingredients in Cabenuva.
Avoid taking or using Cabenuva if any of the following apply:
Cabenuva often causes reactions at the injection site, including pain, swelling, and redness. Other common effects are fever, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, sleep issues, dizziness, and rash.
Serious risks include allergic reactions, which may present with fever, tiredness, skin and eye swelling, and difficulty breathing. Immediate medical attention is necessary for these symptoms. Post-injection reactions can occur, such as trouble breathing, stomach cramps, and feeling faint, which usually resolve quickly after the injection. Liver issues might also arise, with symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, and abdominal pain. Depression or mood changes, particularly thoughts of self-harm, require urgent medical care.
