What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Cabometyx is prescribed for the treatment of advanced kidney cancer, liver cancer, and differentiated thyroid cancer.

Cabometyx is available in oral tablets of 20 mg, 40 mg, and 60 mg strengths.

Directions

Cabometyx should be taken as instructed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns about the medication can be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Patients typically take one tablet by mouth one time a day. Your doctor will instruct you on how much Cabometyx you should take.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Cabometyx is cabozantinib. Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose anhydrous, hydroxypropyl cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate.

Contraindications

There aren’t any conditions that prevent a person from taking Cabometyx per the most recent Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Cabometyx, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Patients who have had a recent hemorrhage should not take Cabometyx.
  • Cabometyx can cause the following:
    • Gastrointestinal perforation and fistulas
    • High blood pressure that may become severe; patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure should avoid taking Cabometyx
    • Diarrhea
    • Hand-foot syndrome (redness and swelling of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet)
    • Liver toxicity, especially when also taking nivolumab
    • Adrenal insufficiency
    • Protein in the urine
    • Osteonecrosis of the jaw that may lead to jaw pain, bone infection, bone inflammation, bone erosion, tooth or periodontal infection, toothache, gingival ulceration or erosion, and slow healing of the mouth or jaw after dental surgery.
    • Impaired wound healing
    • Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome (RPLS), a condition that causes headaches, vision problems, mental changes, seizures, and swelling of the brain
    • Thyroid problems
    • Low blood calcium levels
  • Cabometyx increases the risk of thrombotic events (i.e., heart attack, blood clots).
  • Cabometyx may injure an unborn fetus; therefore, effective contraception is recommended during treatment and continued for 4 months of stopping Cabometyx.

Side Effects

Cabometyx side effects include diarrhea, fatigue, hand-foot syndrome, decreased appetite, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and constipation. Other side effects can also occur, so contact your doctor immediately if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
