Calcort (Deflazacort)

Description

Calcort, known generically as Deflazacort, is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory effects. Doctors typically prescribe it to treat conditions that stem from inflammation and a weak immune response, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Classified as a glucocorticoid, Deflazacort helps manage symptoms by reducing swelling and altering the immune system's response.

Directions

Calcort is typically taken orally with or without food. The usual dosage depends on the medical condition being treated. It’s important to take this medication with a doctor’s instructions, as the dosage may need to be adjusted over time or during periods of stress or illness. It's also important not to abruptly stop taking Calcort without consulting a healthcare provider, as there may be a need for a gradual reduction in dosage to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Contraindications

Cautions

• Regular medical check-ups are crucial to fine-tune the dosage and monitor for adverse effects.
• Using Calcort for a long time can suppress your adrenal glands, which may require an increased dosage during times of physical stress or illness. This effect can continue for some time even after stopping the medication.
• Gradually taper off Calcort under medical supervision if you've been using it long-term to avoid withdrawal symptoms or flare-ups of your condition.
• Calcort can increase your risk of infections and may mask the symptoms, making them less apparent and potentially more severe.
• Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if you are unvaccinated. If exposed, get medical help right away.
• Report any changes in vision to your doctor promptly as Calcort use may cause eye issues.
• Discuss with your dentist that you are on Calcort as it can affect dental health, especially if undergoing invasive procedures.
• Severe bone, joint, or muscle pain can occur with Calcort. If you experience these symptoms, consult your doctor about possibly discontinuing the medication.
• If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or stomach ulcers, monitor these conditions closely as Calcort may complicate their management.
• Watch for psychological side effects like mood swings or depression, particularly if you or your family have a history of psychiatric disorders.

Side Effects

Calcort can commonly cause some stomach-related side effects, including indigestion, a bloated feeling, or discomfort in the stomach area. Some people may also experience increased appetite leading to weight gain, particularly noticeable around the face, or they might observe unusual hair growth. If you have diabetes, symptoms such as increased thirst and frequent urination could be worsened. These side effects are typically mild but if they persist or worsen, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider.

Serious reactions require immediate medical attention. If you experience any swelling of the face, lips, throat, or develop hives, indicating a possible severe allergic reaction, seek urgent medical help. Signs like black, tarry stools or vomiting that looks like coffee grounds could indicate a stomach ulcer, which is a serious condition. If you experience these or any other severe symptoms such as sudden severe stomach pain or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately.
