What is a Generic Drug?

Directions

Canasa should be used as directed. Your doctor will determine an appropriate Canasa suppository dosage and treatment regimen for you. The recommended dose is one suppository rectally one time a day at bedtime for 3-6 weeks.

The suppository should not be cut or broken. Ensure that you drink an adequate amount of fluids. Retain the suppository for at least 1-3 hours.

Staining of direct contact surfaces, such as fabrics, flooring, vinyl, marble, painted surfaces, granite, and enamel, can be caused by Canasa; therefore, do not allow Canasa to come into contact with these surfaces.

Keep Canasa suppositories stored below 25oC (77oF) or in the refrigerator. Protect from direct heat, humidity, and light.

Ingredients

Mesalamine is the active ingredient in Canasa.

Hard fat base is an inactive ingredient included.

Contraindications

Do not use Canasa if you are allergic to salicylates or aminosalicylates or to any of the ingredients in the suppository.

    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Canasa is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • The risks and benefits should be evaluated in patients with kidney impairment or taking medications that can damage the kidneys; kidney function should be monitored.
    • Symptoms of mesalamine-induced acute intolerance syndrome may be hard to distinguish from worsening/aggravation of ulcerative colitis.
    • Hypersensitivity reactions, including myocarditis and pericarditis
    • Liver failure; the risks and benefits should be evaluated in patients with liver impairment
    • Severe cutaneous adverse reactions
    • Photosensitivity; sun exposure should be avoided. Be sure to wear protective clothing and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen when going outside
    • Kidney stones; standard radiography or computed tomography cannot detect mesalamine-containing stones
    • Interaction with lab test for urinary normetanephrine

Canasa suppository side effects may include but are not limited to dizziness, rectal pain, fever, rash, acne, and colitis.
