What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Cayston (Aztreonam) is an antibacterial medicine used primarily to improve breathing symptoms in people with cystic fibrosis who have lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Classified as an inhaled antibiotic, it targets and disrupts the bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. This medication comes in a specific formulation that allows for direct inhalation into the lungs, providing a targeted approach to treatment. Cayston has been formulated to avoid the use of substances like arginine that could potentially cause inflammation, making it suitable for its intended method of delivery.

Directions

Cayston should be administered through inhalation using the Altera Nebulizer System. Patients typically take one single-use vial (75 mg of solution) three times a day, with at least four hours between doses, for a 28-day course followed by a 28-day off-cycle. When preparing the dose, mix the contents of the vial – the powdered aztreonam with a saline solution – and then transfer the entire mixture into the medication reservoir of the nebulizer. It is important to use the medication promptly after mixing it to ensure effectiveness.

When taking Cayston, patients should sit in an upright position and breathe normally, ensuring they inhale the entire dose. Be aware that skipping doses or not completing the full course can reduce efficacy and increase the risk of drug resistance. Always follow the specific instructions provided by the healthcare professional and refer to the patient information leaflet for more details.

Ingredients

Cayston is a medication containing the active ingredient Aztreonam. Specifically, each 2 mL vial of Cayston includes 75 mg of Aztreonam and 46.7 mg of Lysine. Cayston does not contain preservatives or Arginine.

Contraindications

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Aztreonam should not use Cayston. This reaction could range from mild to severe.

Cautions

  • Discuss with a healthcare provider the following before using Cayston:
    • Any allergies you may have
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Other medical conditions you have
    • All medications you are currently taking
  • Stop Cayston and seek medical help if you experience rashes on your face, swelling, or throat tightness due to allergic reactions.
  • Watch for sudden difficulties in breathing during treatment, especially if you haven't used a bronchodilator beforehand.
  • Consult your doctor if your breathing worsens after completing a Cayston treatment cycle to determine if it's due to a lung flare-up.
  • Use Cayston only for confirmed Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections to avoid promoting the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Side Effects

Cayston is often associated with respiratory symptoms such as coughing, nasal congestion, wheezing, and sore throat. Other common side effects include fever, which is more common in children than adults, chest discomfort, stomach pain, and vomiting.

Some people may experience severe allergic reactions to Cayston, which require immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include rash, facial swelling, throat tightness, and difficulty breathing. Additionally, Cayston can cause bronchospasm, characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness, particularly right after use. To help prevent bronchospasm, it is recommended to use an inhaled bronchodilator before each treatment with Cayston. If you experience any signs of a severe allergic reaction or bronchospasm, stop using Cayston and contact your healthcare provider right away.
