What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) is a medication given as an injection for the treatment of adults who have any of the following conditions:

  • Crohn’s disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Active psoriatic arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Non-radiographic axial ankylosing spondylarthritis with inflammatory signs
  • Moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy

Cimzia comes in single-dose vials that contain 200 mg lyophilized powder or a single-dose prefilled syringes that contain 200 mg/mL of solution.

Directions

Cimiza injection should be used as your healthcare provider has instructed. He or she will decide on a treatment plan for you depending on the condition you have. A healthcare professional should teach you or your caregiver on the appropriate storage, preparation, administration, and disposal of Cimzia.

Cimiza should be injected subcutaneously (underneath the skin) in the thigh or abdomen. Be sure to rotate injection sites with each administration.

Ingredients

Certolizumab pegol is the active ingredient in Cimzia.

Lactic acid, polysorbate, and sucrose are the inactive ingredients in the lyophilized powder. Water for Injection is also used for mixing.

Sodium acetate, sodium chloride, and Water for Injection are the inactive ingredients in the prefilled syringes.

Contraindications

Cimzia should not be given to patients who are seriously allergic to any of its ingredients.

Cautions

  • Cimzia is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • The risk of serious infections that necessitate hospitalization or can result in death including tuberculosis (TB), bacterial sepsis, invasive fungal infections (such as histoplasmosis), and infections caused by other opportunistic pathogens is increased.
    • Cimzia should be discontinued if a patient develops a serious infection or sepsis.
    • Latent TB testing should be performed. TB treatment should be started prior to beginning Cimzia if the test is positive.
    • The occurrence of active TB should be monitored in all patients receiving Cimzia, even if they had an initial negative latent TB test.
    • Cimzia is not approved for use in the pediatric population, as children and adolescents who received TNF blockers like Cimzia have developed potentially fatal lymphoma and other malignancies.
  • Before you start using Cimzia, discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take, including vitamins, herbals, and supplements
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • The following may occur with Cimzia use:
    • Serious infections
    • Malignancies, or cancers
    • Heart failure
    • Hypersensitivity reactions
    • Reactivation of hepatitis B virus
    • Neurological reactions
    • Bleeding abnormalities
    • Lupus-like syndrome
  • Use of Cimzia with Anakinra, abatacept, rituximab, or natalizumab should be avoided; using them together can increase the risk of serious infections.
  • Patients should not receive live vaccines while they are being treated with Cimiza.

Side Effects

Cimzia side effects include but are not limited to upper respiratory tract infection, rash, and urinary tract infection. Inform your healthcare provider of any bothersome or persistent side effects that develop.
