Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
COMBIGAN (Brimonidine/Timolol) eye drops is a medication prescribed to treat increased intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. COMBIGAN is a combination product that contains both brimonidine and timolol, which work by different mechanisms.
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerves and if left untreated can lead to irreversible loss of vision. Increased intraocular pressure is one of the risk factors for glaucoma, and if treated can help prevent optic nerve damage.

Instill one drop of COMBIGAN to the affected eye(s) twice daily. Application of COMBIGAN should be separated from other eye drops by at least 5 minutes.
For those who wear contact lenses, they should not be inserted until 15 minutes after using COMBIGAN.
Brimonidine tartrate
Brimonidine works by activating alpha-adrenergic receptors on the surface of ciliary body cells. By activating these receptors, brimonidine reduced the produces of aqueous humor, lowering the pressure inside the eye.
Timolol maleate
Timolol also works at the ciliary body cells and blocks the activation of beta-adrenergic receptors, which reduces the production of aqueous humor and has the downstream effect of lowering intraocular pressure.
Inactive ingredients of COMBIGAN include benzalkonium chloride (antibacterial agent), hydrochloric acid (for pH balance), sodium hydroxide (for pH balance), sodium phosphate monobasic and dibasic, and water.
Do not touch the tip of the COMBIGAN eyedropper to the eye or other nonsterile surfaces, as it can contaminate the product. Contaminated products have been reported to cause bacterial infection.
There is a chance that ophthalmic products can be absorbed into the systemic circulation. In that case of beta-blockers like timolol, systemic side effects may include cardiac failure, pulmonary disease, vascular insufficiency, muscle weakness, masking of low blood sugar, and thyroid disorders. If you notice systemic side effects of COMBIGAN, stop the product and speak with your prescriber immediately.
The most common side effects of COMBIGAN include:
COMBIGAN side effects on the kidney have been studied and are minimal because the drops are not readily absorbed systemically. Other systemic side effects are also rare.
