What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Chemical Name: DORZOLAMIDE (dor-ZOLE-a-mide) and TIMOLOL (TIM-oh-lole)

COSOPT is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who are insufficiently responsive to beta-blockers (failed to achieve target IOP determined after multiple measurements over time). It works by lowering pressure in the eye by decreasing the production of natural fluids in the eye. COSOPT is used for patients whose eye condition has not responded to another medication.

Directions

Take COSOPT exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow patient instructions for safe and effective use. Do not use while you are wearing contact lenses. COSOPT may contain a preservative that can be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the eye drops before putting your contact lenses in.

Cautions

To make sure you can safely take COSOPT, patients should thoroughly discuss their medical history with their doctor, especially if you have:

  • allergic reactions to COSOPT or to benzalkonium chloride and/or if you have any other allergies
  • lung disease (current or past history of asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • certain types of irregular heartbeats (sinus bradycardia, second or third degree AV block)
  • certain types of heart disease (severe heart failure)
  • kidney disease, kidney stones
  • liver disease
  • diabetes
  • overactive thyroid disease
  • muscle weakness disorders
  • low blood flow to the brain (cerebrovascular insufficiency)

COSOPT should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. COSOPT passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while using this drug. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Inform your doctor if you have any eye injury or infection, or if you need to have any type of surgery, especially eye surgery. You may need to stop using COSOPT for a short time.

Side Effects

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about additional side effects.
