What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Cyklokapron, known generically as Tranexamic Acid, is a medication used to reduce or prevent excessive bleeding in various conditions. As an anti-fibrinolytic agent, it works by blocking the breakdown of blood clots, which helps to control bleeding. It's often prescribed for individuals experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding or for controlling hemorrhage during dental procedures in patients with hemophilia. Administered orally or through injection, Cyklokapron can help manage bleeding for patients in clinical settings or during surgeries.

Directions

Cyklokapron is usually taken orally or given by injection. Adults typically take two tablets three times a day for various conditions, including heavy menstrual bleeding. It's important to confirm the appropriate dosage with a healthcare provider, as it can vary based on the specific medical condition and individual health needs. For those with kidney problems, a lower dosage may be necessary. Tablets should be swallowed whole, without chewing or breaking them, to ensure proper release of the medication in the body.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Cyklokapron is Tranexamic Acid.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Those who have had a prior allergic reaction to Tranexamic Acid or any other component of the medication
  • People with a past occurrence of blood clots in the veins or arteries
  • People with ongoing bleeding within the skull should avoid this medication

Cautions

  • Before taking Cyklokapron, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Cyklokapron helps control bleeding, but it also increases the risk of blood clots forming in the veins or arteries. You should not take Cyklokapron if you already have active blood clots. Be especially cautious if you’re also using medications that increase the risk of clotting, like hormone-based birth control or certain clotting factor treatments. Talk to your doctor about all medications you're taking.
  • In rare cases, Cyklokapron has caused seizures, especially in people undergoing heart surgery or those given high doses. The risk may also be higher in people with kidney problems or a history of seizures. If you notice twitching, strange movements, or other seizure symptoms, seek medical attention right away.
  • Animal studies showed changes to the retina with long-term use of high doses of Tranexamic Acid, though this hasn’t been seen in humans. If you need Cyklokapron for more than 3 months, your doctor may recommend regular eye exams to monitor for any visual changes.
  • Cyklokapron may cause dizziness. Until you know how it affects you, avoid driving, using machinery, or doing anything that requires full alertness. Let your doctor know if dizziness becomes a problem.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Cyklokapron include headache, sinus issues, back pain, and abdominal discomfort. Some people may also experience joint or muscle pain, fatigue, or anemia. These symptoms are usually mild and often go away with continued use or after stopping the medication. If any of these symptoms become bothersome, talk to your healthcare provider.

More serious but less common side effects include blood clots, which may be more likely if you are also taking clot-promoting or certain leukemia medications. Eye problems have also been reported—if you notice changes in vision, stop taking Cyklokapron and see an eye specialist promptly. Rarely, people may have a severe allergic reaction with symptoms like shortness of breath or a tight throat. Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of a serious reaction.
