What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Daraprim (pyrimethamine) is a prescription medication used to treat toxoplasmosis when taken with a sulfonamide (e.g., sulfadoxine).

Daraprim comes in 25 mg tablets for oral administration.

Directions

Daraprim should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will determine an appropriate Daraprim dosage and treatment duration for you.

Ingredients

Pyrimethamine is the active ingredient in Daraprim.

Corn and potato starch, lactose, and magnesium stearate are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Do not take Daraprim if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have diagnosed megaloblastic anemia due to a deficiency in folate.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Daraprim, discuss the following with your doctor:

    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions

    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Pyrimethamine may cause cancer according to data in 2 humans, a 51-year-old female who developed leukemia after taking the medication for 2 years and a 56-year-old patients who developed reticulum cell sarcoma after taking the medication for 14 months; both patients were taking pyrimethamine for toxoplasmosis.
  • Patients with convulsive disorders may require a small starting dose to avoid potential nervous system toxicity.
  • Patients with kidney or liver problems, alcoholism, malabsorption syndrome, or who are pregnant, and patients who are taking phenytoin, should exercise caution when taking Daraprim.
  • Stop taking Daraprim and seek medical attention right away if you develop a skin rash.
  • Seek medical attention right away if you have a sore throat, are pale, have purple or red spots on your skin or in your mouth or throat, or if your tongue is swollen and inflamed.
  • Taking Daraprim with food may minimize vomiting/anorexia.
  • Your doctor may recommend that you take folinic acid while being treated with Daraprim.

Side Effects

Daraprim side effects may include but are not limited to hypersensitivity reactions, anorexia, vomiting, megaloblastic anemia, abnormal blood cell counts, swelling/inflammation of the tongue, blood in the urine, and heart rhythm problems.
