What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Deramaxx (deracoxib) is for use in dogs only by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian to manage pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. It is also used in dogs to manage pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic and dental surgeries.

Directions

Deramaxx comes in 12 mg, 25 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg chewable, beefy-flavored tablets. If your dog's dose is less than 12 mg, the 12 mg tablet can be cut in half to provide a 6 mg dose. Talk to your veterinarian about how to give an accurate dose to your dog using the tablets. 

The instructions that are supplied with your dog's Deramaxx prescription should be followed. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist about any questions you may have about the medication.

Dosing for pain and inflammation in dogs caused by osteoarthritis:

0.45 mg to 0.91 mg per pound per day (1 mg to 2 mg per kg per day) as a single dose, as needed

Dosing for pain and inflammation in dogs after orthopedic surgery:

1.4 mg to 1.8 mg per pound per day (3 mg to 4 mg per kg per day) as a single dose, as needed. Do not administer for more than 7 days.

Dosing for pain and inflammation in dogs after dental surgery:

0.45 mg to 0.91 mg per pound per day (1 mg to 2 mg per kg per day) as a single dose for 3 days. Give the first dose one hour before dental surgery. Give the remaining doses once daily for up to two days.

You may give Deramaxx to your dog after your dog has eaten a meal (preferred) or you may give it without food.

The active ingredient in Deramaxx is deracoxib.

Contraindications

Do not give your dog Deramaxx if your dog has an allergy to deracoxib.

Cautions

  • Before you give Deramaxx to your dog, discuss the following with your veterinarian:
    • Your dog's medications or supplements
    • Your dog's allergies or history of allergic reactions to medications, including other NSAIDs
    • Your dog's medical conditions
    • Your dog's history of stomach problems
    • Your dog's history of kidney problems
    • If your dog is pregnant or if you plan to breed your dog
    • If your dog is nursing
  • Deramaxx should only be given to dogs. Avoid use in humans or cats.

Side Effects

Vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, seizures, pyoderma, dermatitis, unilateral conjunctivitis, blood in the urine, urinary tract infection, enlarged spleen, and grade II murmur systolic can occur with the use of Deramaxx. These may not be the only side effects that can occur during treatment with Deramaxx. Watch for side effects and immediately inform your veterinarian of any troublesome or persistent side effects that develop in your dog.
