What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Dovato (dolutegravir/lamivudine) is a medication used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It is a combination of two drugs that work together to disrupt the virus’s ability to replicate. You can buy Dovato as a 50mg/300mg tablet. Store your Dovato tablets at room temperature. 

Directions

  • You can take Dovato with or without food.
  • Dovato can lose its effectiveness if taken with certain products. Take Dovato at least two hours before, or six hours after consuming products that contain any of the following:
    • Calcium
    • Magnesium
    • Iron
    • Aluminum
  • If you miss a dose, do one of the following:
    • Take it as soon as you remember.
    • If you realize you missed a dose and it is almost time for your next tablet, then skip the dose you missed and continue with your regular schedule.
  • Do not take two doses of Dovato to make up for a missed dose.
  • Usual Dovato dosage:
    • Take one tablet by mouth once daily.

Cautions

  • Dovato has a black box warning that reads: PATIENTS CO-INFECTED WITH HEPATITIS B VIRUS (HBV) AND HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV-1): EMERGENCE OF LAMIVUDINE-RESISTANT HBV AND EXACERBATIONS OF HBV
  • Dovato can interact with other drugs. Discuss all your medications with your physician.
    • Dovato can have a potentially life-threatening interaction with dofetilide.
  • Avoid Dovato if you have a known allergy to dolutegravir or lamivudine.  
  • You may be at a higher risk of severe adverse effects if you have underlying liver disease.
  • Dovato could be harmful to a fetus during the first trimester. If you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, discuss the risks with your physician.
  • Dovato can cause Immune Reconstitution Syndrome. Discuss your risk with your doctor before starting Dovato.
