Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
EDEX (alprostadil) is an injectable medication prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction.
EDEX is a naturally occurring substance called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). EDEX works by causing the blood vessels and smooth muscle of the penis to relax. The relaxation increases blood flow to the lacunar spaces of the penis, which entraps blood and causes engorgement and erection.
EDEX is administered via injection. Inject 2.5 mcg to 40 mcg intracavernously, alternating injection sites. Administer over a 5-10 second interval and compress the injection site with an alcohol swab for 5 minutes after administration.
The dosage must first be determined through in-office administration at the doctor's office. The doctor will administer an initial dose and if the effect lasts for one hour, then that dose is used. If the effect does not last for one hour, the dose is increased. While determining the initial dose, one must stay until detumescence occurs and the erection subsides. No more than two doses should be administered in a 24 hour period during the initial titration.
The injection technique is taught during the initial dosage titration. After the proper dosage is determined, EDEX injection can be administered at home. Do not change the dosage of EDEX without discussing it with the doctor first. The maximum frequency during maintenance treatment is no more than three times weekly, with at least 24 hours between doses.
The active ingredient in EDEX is alprostadil.
Use EDEX with caution if you have a history of cardiovascular events. EDEX can cause hypotension (low blood pressure) and dizziness.
Follow-up with your doctor at least every 3 months while taking EDEX. Regular follow-up will help identify any penile changes and side effects.
Do not combine EDEX with other erectile dysfunction treatments.
Do not reuse or share needles.
The most common adverse effects from EDEX may include:
Follow-up care is very important while taking EDEX, and can help identify the early warning signs of adverse effects. Make sure to regularly see your doctor (typically every 3 months), while you are taking EDEX.
