What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Effient (Prasugrel) is a medication that helps prevent blood clots in certain people. It works by blocking a specific receptor on platelets, which are the cells in your blood that help it to clot. This action makes Effient useful in reducing the risk of serious problems like strokes and heart attacks, especially for people who are undergoing certain medical procedures like angioplasty. Effient comes in tablet form and is often part of a larger plan to manage heart health.

Directions

Effient is a medication that you take by mouth. If your doctor has prescribed Effient, it’s important to follow their instructions and the dosage on the label. Usually, you start with a dose of 60 mg, which is taken all at once, followed by a daily dose of 10 mg. If you weigh less than 60 kg or have certain health risks, your doctor may give you a smaller Effient dose. Make sure to swallow the tablet whole—don’t split, chew, or crush it.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Effient is Prasugrel.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Effient if you have a history of the following:

  • Active bleeding, such as peptic ulcers or intracranial hemorrhage
  • A history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Allergy to Prasugrel or any of its components

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Effient, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Effient increases your risk of bleeding, which can sometimes be serious or even life-threatening. This risk is highest shortly after starting treatment. If you experience unexpected bleeding or symptoms like dizziness or weakness, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Effient is not recommended for people with active bleeding, a history of stroke, or transient ischemic attacks (TIA). Older adults (age 75+), those weighing less than 60 kg, or individuals with certain medical conditions like recent surgery or peptic ulcers may have a higher risk of bleeding. Be cautious if you’re taking medications that increase bleeding risk, such as blood thinners or NSAIDs.
  • Effient can increase bleeding during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery or other procedures. If you are scheduled for surgery, stop Effient at least 7 days in advance. For urgent surgeries, let your healthcare provider know that you’re taking Effient so they can manage bleeding risks effectively.
  • Stop taking Effient if you experience active bleeding, have a stroke, or need surgery. However, stopping Effient too soon after a stent placement can increase the risk of serious heart problems like stent thrombosis or heart attack. Always follow your doctor’s advice on when to stop or restart Effient.

Side Effects

The most common Effient side effects include bleeding and bruising more easily than normal. Some people may also experience headache, dizziness, or nausea. These side effects are generally mild but should be monitored, especially if they worsen or persist.

Effient may cause serious side effects, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a rare but life-threatening condition that involves blood clotting in small vessels throughout the body. Symptoms of TTP include purplish skin spots, jaundice, extreme fatigue, or confusion. Severe allergic reactions, such as swelling, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, can also occur, especially in those with a history of allergic reactions to similar medications. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience these symptoms.
