What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Emtriva (emtricitabine) is an oral medication prescribed with other therapies for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Emtriva comes in 200 mg capsules and a 10 mg/mL oral solution.

Directions

Emtriva should be taken exactly as your doctor has instructed. The medication guide that accompanies your prescription should be read carefully.

Your doctor will tell you how much medication you should take based on how old you are, how much you weigh, and your kidney function.

Storage:

Store Emtriva capsules in the original container at 25°C (77°F.) Keep Emtriva away from children.

Store Emtriva oral solution in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F). If Emtriva oral solution is stored at 25°C (77°F), use the medication within 3 months.

Ingredients

Emtricitabine is the active ingredient contained in Emtriva.

The inactive ingredients in Emtriva 200 mg capsules include the following: crospovidone, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, titanium dioxide, gelatin, and FD&C blue No. 2.

Inactive ingredients in the oral solution include the following: cotton candy flavor, FD&C yellow No. 6, edetate disodium, methylparaben and propylparaben (preservatives), sodium phosphate (monobasic), propylene glycol, water, and xylitol (sweetener). To balance pH, sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid may be added.

Contraindications

Do not take Emtriva if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients.

Cautions

Emtriva is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) that gets severely worse can occur in patients with both HIV-1 and HBV who have stopped Emtriva therapy. These patients should receive close monitoring of their liver function. HBV treatment may be necessary.
  • Before you start taking Emtriva, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • About your medical history
    • About your current health conditions
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Immune system problems, lactic acidosis, and liver enlargement with fat buildup in the liver may occur with Emtriva.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, side effects associated with Emtriva include headache, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, depression, trouble sleeping, abnormal dreams, rash, abdominal pain, weakness, increased cough, stuffy nose, and skin hyperpigmentation. If you develop bothersome or persistent side effects, immediately notify your doctor.
