What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Enbrel (etanercept) is an injection that is administered subcutaneously (underneath the skin) to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis in adults.

Enbrel is also administered to pediatric patients who are at least 2 years old to treat polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis and pediatric patients who are at least 4 years old to treat plaque psoriasis.

Enbrel comes in 25 mg/0.5 mL or 50 mg/mL single-dose, prefilled syringes. It also comes in a 50 mg/mL single-dose, prefilled SureClick® autoinjector.

Directions

Enbrel should be administered as your doctor has instructed. Your treatment regimen will be determined by your doctor based on your medical condition.

You or a caregiver should receive instructions on the proper storage, preparation, administration, and disposal of Enbrel. Enbrel injection should be given underneath the skin in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

Ingredients

Etanercept is the active ingredient in Enbrel.

L-arginine hydrochloride, sodium chloride, and sucrose are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Enbrel should not be administered to patients with sepsis.

Cautions

  • Enbrel is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • The likelihood of serious infections that necessitate hospitalization or result in death, such as tuberculosis (TB), bacterial sepsis, invasive fungal infections, and other opportunistic infections, is increased.
    • Use of Enbrel should be discontinued if a patient develops a serious infection or sepsis during treatment.
    • A TB latent test should be completed. If the test yields a positive result, TB treatment should be initiated prior to starting Enbrel.
    • Patients on Enbrel should be monitored for TB during treatment regardless of an initially negative latent TB test.
  • Before Enbrel is started, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and supplements
    • Your allergies
    • Any existing health concerns
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding
  • Enbrel contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Onset or worsening of demyelinating disease
    • Lymphoma
    • Onset or worsening of congestive heart failure
    • Decreased platelet and blood cell counts
    • Anaphylaxis or other serious allergic reactions
    • Auto-immune liver inflammation or lupus-like syndrome

Side Effects

Enbrel side effects include but are not limited to infections and reactions at the injection site. Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that become bothersome or persistent.
