What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Eryped (erythromycin ethylsuccinate) is an antibiotic that is prescribed for the treatment of certain susceptible infections, including:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Listeriosis
  • Whooping cough
  • Skin infections
  • Diphtheria
  • Erythrasma
  • Intestinal amebiasis
  • Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Syphilis
  • Conjunctivitis in newborns
  • Pneumonia in infants
  • Urogenital infections in pregnancy
  • Nongonococcal urethritis
  • Legionnaires Disease
  • Rheumatic fever (prevention of initial and recurrent attacks)

Eryped oral suspension is available in the following strengths:

  • Eryped (erythromycin ethylsuccinate) 200 mg erythromycin/5 mL
  • Eryped (erythromycin ethylsuccinate) 400 mg erythromycin/5 mL
  • Eryped drops (100 mg erythromycin/2.5 mL (dropperful))

Directions

Eryped should be taken as directed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns about the medication may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist. Be sure to complete the full treatment course, even if your symptoms improve.

Your doctor will determine an appropriate treatment regimen for you, depending on your age, weight, and infection being treated.

Eryped should be stored at or below 25°C (77°F) and used within 35 days. Refrigeration is not required.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Eryped is erythromycin. Caramel, polysorbate, sodium citrate, sucrose, xanthan gum, and artificial flavors are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Patients with an allergy to Eryped should not take it. In addition, patients who are taking terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, ergotamine, or dihydroergotamine should not take Eryped. Ask your doctor if you do not know whether or not you take any of these medications.

Cautions

  • Before you begin treatment with Eryped, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Some patients taking oral erythromycin have experienced liver problems.
  • Erythromycin may not reach the fetus enough to prevent congenital syphilis; therefore, it is recommended that infants born to women who received Eryped during pregnancy should receive an appropriate penicillin regimen.
  • C. difficile, a bacterium that results in diarrhea, may occur with Eryped use.
  • Worsened symptoms of myasthenia gravis and new onset of symptoms of myasthenic syndrome have occurred in some patients receiving erythromycin.
  • Some infants receiving erythromycin have developed infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Parents should notify their doctor right away if vomiting or irritability occurs while feeding.
  • Long-term or repeated use of erythromycin can result in a superinfection.

Side Effects

Common Eryped side effects include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and anorexia. Call your doctor right away if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
