What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

FortiFlora is a probiotic supplement designed to help keep pets' digestive systems healthy. It contains a special type of bacteria called Enterococcus faecium, which helps balance the good and bad bacteria in the gut and aids in absorbing nutrients from food. Unlike medications, FortiFlora is considered a nutritional supplement. It is often used to help manage diarrhea or support pets with digestive issues. Many veterinarians recommend it for dogs and cats because of its potential benefits for gut health and the immune system.

Directions

The typical dosage is one packet of FortiFlora daily. The fine powder within the packet is meant to be sprinkled directly onto the pet's food. When introducing FortiFlora to your pet’s regimen, it is important to follow your vet's guidance, as they can consider specific health factors and dietary needs. While this product is typically well-tolerated, unusual signs should be watched for after your pet consumes it, and any concerns should be discussed with your veterinarian.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in FortiFlora is Enterococcus faecium SF68. Other ingredients may be found in the supplement based on the formulation.

Contraindications

Avoid administering this supplement in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the product or its ingredients.

Cautions

  • It's important to use the product as directed by a veterinarian.
  • Discuss any current pet food, medications, or supplements your pet is taking to avoid potential interactions.
  • Inform the veterinarian if your pet has any underlying health issues, especially those relating to the digestive system.
  • Monitor your pet for any signs of worsening symptoms, such as increased diarrhea, vomiting, or a lack of appetite, and report these to the vet immediately.
  • Stick to the prescribed dosage—usually 1 packet per day for dogs and cats, although severity may warrant a different dosage.
  • If your pet is pregnant or nursing, consult the vet, as the effects of FortiFlora on unborn or newborn animals are not well documented.
  • Be aware of any allergic reactions; signs may include hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing, and require immediate medical attention.
  • If your pet is taking antibiotics, discuss with your vet how FortiFlora can be effectively used, as antibiotics can also alter the gut flora.

Side Effects

FortiFlora may cause a range of side effects, although they typically are not severe. Common issues can include digestive upset such as diarrhea, gas, and abdominal discomfort. Some pets might experience changes in stool consistency or frequency. These effects often occur as the pet's system adjusts to the introduction of new bacteria from the probiotic. If a pet shows signs of digestive distress when starting FortiFlora, it usually lessens with continued use.

In rare cases, more serious side effects may develop, especially in dogs with compromised immune systems. Pets may experience a severe allergic reaction, indicated by symptoms like swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing. Additionally, FortiFlora might interact negatively with other medications or worsen pre-existing health conditions. If a pet shows signs of severe discomfort or illness, such as persistent vomiting, lethargy, or a notable change in behavior or appetite, it is important they receive veterinary attention promptly.
