What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Gastrolyte (electrolyte and dextrose oral powder) is prescribed to prevent dehydration due to diarrhea and/or vomiting (caused by acute gastroenteritis). The medication is also used to maintain hydration and electrolyte and fluid balance in cases of diarrhea and/or vomiting (caused by acute gastroenteritis).

Gastrolyte is available in foil pouches.

Directions

Gastrolyte drink should be used as your doctor has prescribed. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Dissolve the contents of the pouches in enough drinking water to make 200 mL (about 7 ounces). Make the solution immediately before eating and consume the solution within one hour of making it. After an hour, discard the remainder. Once reconstituted, the solution can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Information concerning how much Gastrolyte to consume and how often you should consume it will be provided to you by your doctor.

Ingredients

The active ingredients contained in Gastrolyte include sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate, and dextrose. The inactive ingredients included in the fruit flavor include aspartame, silicon dioxide, grapefruit flavor, and pineapple flavor. In the regular flavor, aspartame and silicon dioxide are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

If you have an allergy to any of its ingredients, you should not take Gastrolyte.

Cautions

  • Before you use Gastrolyte, talk to your doctor about:
  • All prescription and nonprescription medications you take
  • Any allergies you may have
  • Your past medical history and current health issues
  • Your pregnancy status
  • Your breastfeeding status
  • Only use water when dissolving the contents of each pouch.
  • If you experience any of the following, talk to your doctor:
    • Worsened diarrhea or vomiting or that lasts longer than 24 hours
    • Dehydration signs (e.g., mental status changes, inactivity, decreased urine output, dry mouth, increased heart rate and/or breathing rate, decreased tears and/or sunken eyes)
    • Electrolyte imbalance signs (e.g., thirst, muscle weakness, or swelling of the hands, face, and/or feet)
    • Bloody diarrhea, in the presence of a high fever, yellowing of the skin, or vomiting that doesn’t go away, or dehydration that does not improve
