What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Gazyva (obinutuzumab) is a treatment that is used with chemotherapy in adults who have follicular lymphoma (FL) that has not been previously treated, did not respond to treatment, or have FL that has returned after receiving treatment. Gazyva is also used with chemotherapy to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia in adults who have not yet received treatment for it.

Gazyva is administered via an intravenous infusion.

Directions

Gazyva comes in 1000 mg/40 mL vials for single dosing. The Gazyva package insert should accompany the vials. Your dose and treatment duration will be determined by your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider may also prescribe medications for infusion-related reactions and tumor lysis syndrome that you take before you receive your Gazyva infusion.

Gazyva will be administered as an intravenous infusion by your healthcare provider.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Gazyva is obinutuzumab.

Contraindications

Patients who have had allergic reactions to Gazyva or any of its excipients, including serum sickness with previous use, should not receive the medication.

Cautions

  • Gazyva is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) that can lead to fulminant hepatitis, liver failure, and death.
    • Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) that can lead to death.
  • Before you start receiving Gazyva, inform your healthcare provider of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Gazyva can cause infusion-related reactions, tumor lysis syndrome, and allergic reactions, including serum sickness.
  • Gazyva should not be administered to patients with an active infection. Patients who have had chronic infections or infections that come back may be at increased risk.
  • Gazyva may cause a reduction in platelets and a certain type of white blood cell (neutrophils).
  • Gazyva may cause blood clotting issues.
  • Patients being treated with Gazyva should not receive live vaccines during treatment and until their B cells have recovered.
  • Harm to an unborn fetus can occur with Gazyva use. Effective contraception is recommended.
  • Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Gazyva.

Side Effects

Gazyva side effects include but are not limited to infusion-related reactions, decreased neutrophils, fatigue, cough, upper respiratory tract infections, musculoskeletal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. Inform your healthcare provider right away if you have worrisome or persistent side effects.
