What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Heparin is a prescription blood thinner medication used for blood clots prevention when people at risk of developing them because of conditions or following a major surgery. This anticoagulant drug prevents platelets clumping together in the blood and forming clots that can be very dangerous if they begin to travel through arteries and into the brain, lungs, or heart. The Heparin antidote is the medication in a suspension that is injected for blood clot prevent and the Heparin drip is the same solution that will be delivered through an IV, most commonly after a major surgery when the patient is still hospitalized.

Directions

Deep Vein Thrombosis / Pulmonary Embolism

Adults: 333 units/kg of body weight injected under skin, or maintenance dosage of 250 units/kg of body weight injected subcutaneously in the same way every 12 hours.

PE / DVT prevention after surgery

Adults: 5,000 units about 2 hours in advance of the surgery, or maintenance dosage of 5,000 units injected subcutaneously under skin every 8–12 hours over 7 days. May vary based on doctor’s recommendations

Children: dosage will vary based on age, body weight, and doctor’s assessment of condition / risk

Store heparin at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°F and 25°C)
