What is a Generic Drug?

Contraindications

The most recent Prescribing Information does not list any contraindications to Herceptin infusion. However, consult with your healthcare provider about whether Herceptin is a treatment option for you.

Cautions

  • Herceptin is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Heart failure manifesting as congestive heart failure and decreased left ventricular ejection fraction may occur. Patients who are also being treated with anthracyclines are at greatest risk. Heart function should be evaluated before and during treatment. Herceptin should be discontinued in cases of cardiomyopathy.
    • Herceptin may cause infusion reactions and lung problems. If anaphylaxis, angioedema (swelling), interstitial pneumonitis, or acute respiratory distress occurs, Herceptin should be stopped.
    • Harm that may be fatal to an unborn fetus may occur with Herceptin use. Patients should understand the risks and use effective birth control methods.
  • Before you receive Herceptin, inform your healthcare provider of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia may worsen. Neutropenia refers to the reduction of a type of white blood cell called neutrophils.

Side Effects

Herceptin side effects include but are not limited to headache, diarrhea, nausea, chills, infection, congestive heart failure, sleep problems, cough, rash, fatigue, and anemia. Inform your healthcare provider right away if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
