What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Humatin (paromomycin) is a drug used to treat infections caused by an intestinal amoeba. It is also useful for the management of hepatic coma. Humatin is supplied as a 250mg capsule that should be stored at normal room temperature.

Directions

  • Swallow Humatin 250 mg capsules with food.
  • You might feel better before your prescription is empty. Still, you should continue taking Humatin as prescribed until it is all gone.
  • If you miss a dose, do one of the following:
    • Take it as soon as you remember.
    • If it is almost time to take the next scheduled dose, then skip the dose you missed.
  • You should not take two doses of Humatin at the same time.
  • Usual Humatin dosage:
    • Intestinal amebiasis: 25 to 30mg/kg of body weight daily for five to ten days. Divide your total daily dosage into three doses per day.
    • Management of hepatic coma: The total daily dose is 4000mg per day for five to six days. Your total daily dose will be divided into smaller doses taken multiple times per day.

Cautions

  • Avoid Humatin if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients.
  • If you have a bowel obstruction, do not use Humatin.
  • If you have bowel lesions, Humatin may cause serious adverse effects. Consult your physician to discuss the risks.
  • Using antibiotics can sometimes lead to infections from organisms that are non-susceptible. Report any signs and symptoms of bacterial infection to your physician.
