What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Hypurin NPH Insulin, Pork is prescribed to treat patients with diabetes who are already receiving animal-derived insulin. It is also prescribed to treat new diabetic patients who are unable to tolerate recombinant human insulin or whose diabetes is not well controlled by recombinant human insulin.

Hypurin NPH Insulin is available as suspension for injection containing 100 International Units per mL.

Directions

Hypurin NPH Insulin should be used as your doctor has directed. The information leaflet that is supplied with your prescription should be carefully read. Refer any questions or concerns to your doctor or pharmacist.

You will be instructed by your healthcare provider on how to appropriately use Hypurin NPH Insulin, including appropriate dosing and administration. Inject Hypurin NPH Insulin underneath the skin or into the muscle of the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or lower abdomen. Each week, a new injection site should be used. Hypurin NPH Insulin should not be injected into a vein.

Use a new needle for each injection. You should not share needles or syringes with other people.

Hypurin NPH Insulin that is not opened can last up to 36 months. However, once it has been opened, it should be refrigerated between 2°C to 8°C for up to 28 days. Avoid freezing it.

Ingredients

Hypurin NPH Insulin contains isophane (porcine).

Glycerol, metacresol, phenol, protamine sulphate, sodium phosphate, water for injection, and zinc (as chloride) are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Hypurin NPH Insulin should not be used in patients exhibiting signs of low blood glucose or who have an allergy to any of the ingredients or excipients in the insulin.

Cautions

Hypurin NPH Insulin has the following Warnings:

  • The most common side effect caused by insulin therapy is low blood glucose. Blood or urinary glucose levels should be monitored by patients.
  • Uncorrected low or high blood glucose can lead to loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.
  • Patients who transfer to Hypurin Pork insulins from other commercially available preparations may need dose adjustments.
  • Hypurin NPH Insulin should never be injected into a vein.
  • Hypurin NPH Insulin may be mixed with Hypurin Regular Insulin in the same syringe. You should draw up Hypurin Regular Insulin first. The injection should be used immediately after drawing up the contents.
  • The vial should not be used if the contents are frozen or if it contains lumps that do not disperse on mixing.
  • Before you begin treatment with Hypurin NPH Insulin, inform your doctor of:
  • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
  • Your allergies
  • Your current health problems
  • Your past medical history
  • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • The dose, injection site, blood flow, temperature, and level of physical activity may affect Hypurin NPH Insulin’s duration of action.
  • Hypurin NPH Insulin may cause low blood potassium levels.
  • Additional insulin may be needed in patients who are sick, are going through puberty, or are experiencing emotional upset.
  • Each vial should be used by only one patient.
  • Heart failure and edema can occur by taking thiazolidinediones (TZDs) alone or with other diabetic medications. Using insulin with TZDs is not an approved regimen for treating type 2 diabetes.
  • The most frequent side effect of insulin is low blood glucose which can cause fatigue, sweating, heart palpitations, disturbed behavior, hunger, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and even death. Keep a check on your blood glucose as recommended. If you have low blood glucose, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on correcting it.
  • Redness, itching, and swelling are injection site reactions that may develop.
  • Hypurin NPH Insulin may hypersensitivity and rarely, anaphylaxis. If you experience trouble breathing, a fast heart rate, swelling, or any other sign or symptom of an allergic reaction, get emergency care immediately.
  • Phenol, m-cresol, zinc, and protamine are all contained in Hypurin NPH insulin. These may cause allergic reactions in some people.
  • Hypurin NPH Insulin may cause nerve pain.
  • It is not recommended to mix Hypurin NPH Insulin with any other insulins. The exception is Hypurin Regular Insulin.

Side Effects

Hypurin NPH Insulin side effects include but are not limited to low blood glucose, low potassium levels, and weight gain. Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
