What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Idacio (adalimumab-aacf) is a medication administered via an injection to reduce the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also administered for treating Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, plaque psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and uveitis.

Idacio single-dose prefilled pens and glass syringes contain 40 mg/0.8 mL.

Directions

Idacio should be used as instructed by the treating physician. Idacio is given via a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the thigh or abdomen. Be sure to rotate injection sites. Refrain from injecting into skin areas that are bruised, tender, red, or hard.

You or a caregiver should receive instructions from a healthcare professional regarding the proper storage, preparation, administration, and disposal of Idacio.

Never share products, needles, or syringes with other people.

Ingredients

Adalimumab-aacf is the active ingredient in Idacio.

Glacial acetic acid, trehalose, polysorbate 80, sodium chloride, and Water for Injection are the inactive ingredients. Sodium hydroxide is added for adjusting pH.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications to Idacio per the most recent Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Idacio, discuss the following with the treating physician:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health issues
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Idacio is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • An increased risk of serious infections that result in hospitalization or death, including tuberculosis (TB), bacterial sepsis, invasive fungal infections, and infections caused by other opportunistic infections, is present.
    • Idacio must be stopped if a patient develops sepsis or an infection that is serious.
    • A latent TB test should be completed. If positive, TB treatment should be started before Idacio treatment is initiated.
    • Monitoring for TB should occur in each patient, despite a negative initial latent TB test result.
    • Lymphoma and other malignancies–some that have been fatal–have occurred in children and adolescents who were receiving TNF blockers, including adalimumab products.
    • Post-marketing cases of a rare type of T-cell lymphoma, hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, have occurred in adolescents and young adults with inflammatory bowel disease who were receiving TNF blockers including adalimumab products.
  • Idacio is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Infections that are serious
    • Fungal infections that are invasive
    • Malignancies
    • Serious allergic reactions or anaphylaxis
    • Hepatitis B virus reactivation
    • Demyelinating disease
    • Reduction in blood cell counts
    • Heart failure that worsens or develops
    • Lupus-like syndrome
  • Patients should not receive live vaccines while being treated with Idacio.

Side Effects

Idacio side effects include but are not limited to infections, reactions at the injection site, headache, and rash.

Immediately tell your doctor if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
