What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Keppra XR is an extended-release prescription medication used to control seizures. It works by changing the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, which may help to prevent the rapid firing of neurons that triggers seizures. Classified as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug, Keppra XR manages partial-onset seizures in adults and children who are at least 12 years old. Unlike immediate-release forms of the medication, the extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosage.

Directions

Keppra XR is a medication that you take by mouth. It’s important to swallow the tablets whole, without breaking, chewing, or crushing them. This drug is typically started at a dosage of 1,000 mg once a day. Your doctor may raise the dose by 1,000 mg every two weeks until you reach a maximum of 3,000 mg each day. To help control seizures, make sure to take Keppra XR at the same time every day. Don’t stop taking it suddenly, as this can increase the chance of having seizures.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Keppra XR is Levetiracetam.

Contraindications

Those who have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to Levetiracetam or any component of Keppra XR should not use this medication.

Cautions

  • Before taking Keppra XR, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Keppra XR may cause mood or behavior changes, including irritability, aggression, anxiety, and depression. In rare cases, psychotic symptoms such as paranoia or confusion have been reported. Let your doctor know if you or a loved one notice sudden changes in mood or behavior.
  • Antiepileptic drugs, including Keppra XR, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions. This risk can appear within the first week of treatment and continue throughout use. Monitor for signs of depression, worsening mood, or suicidal thoughts, and contact your doctor immediately if these occur.
  • Keppra XR may cause drowsiness or extreme tiredness, especially when starting treatment. Avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing tasks that require full alertness until you know how the medication affects you.
  • Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat), have been reported. If you experience these symptoms, stop taking Keppra XR and seek emergency medical help immediately.
  • Rare but serious skin conditions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), have been linked to Keppra XR. Symptoms include a widespread rash, blistering, and peeling skin. If you develop a rash, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor right away.
  • Keppra XR may cause balance issues, dizziness, or difficulty walking. If you experience unsteadiness or trouble with movement, consult your doctor.
  • Keppra XR can cause changes in blood cell counts, leading to an increased risk of infections, fatigue, or unusual bruising. If you experience weakness, frequent infections, or unusual bleeding, notify your doctor.
  • Do not stop taking Keppra XR suddenly, as it may increase the risk of more frequent or severe seizures. If you need to stop taking the medication, your doctor will help you gradually reduce the dose.
  • Pregnancy can affect how Keppra XR works in the body. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, your doctor may need to adjust your dose and monitor your condition closely.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Keppra XR include sleepiness and irritability. Some people may experience extreme tiredness, weakness, or mood changes such as agitation, anxiety, or depression. In rare cases, individuals may develop psychotic symptoms, including hallucinations or delusions. These effects can vary in severity, and it is important to monitor any changes in behavior or alertness while taking the medication.

Keppra XR may cause severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, or throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing. Some people develop serious skin rashes that may worsen over time. In rare cases, a life-threatening allergic reaction affecting the liver, kidneys, or heart has been reported. If you notice a rash, fever, dark urine, yellowing skin, or trouble walking, seek medical attention immediately.
