What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Lapelga (pegfilgrastim) is a prescription medication given as an injection to help the bone marrow make white blood cells that fight infections. It is used in certain cancer patients who receive chemotherapy that decreases white blood cell production to help treat low neutrophils, a certain type of white blood cell.

Lapelga (pegfilgrastim) single-dose prefilled syringes come in 6 mg/0.6 mL.

Directions

You or a caregiver should receive training on the proper preparation, administration, and disposal of Lapelga. Lapelga is administered underneath the skin.

Never share needles or syringes with others.

Storage:

Keep Lapelga in the refrigerator and out of the light. It should not be frozen or shaken vigorously. If the medication is accidentally frozen, allow it to thaw in the refrigerator before you use it. Discard if it is frozen 2 times or if it is left at room temperature past 24 hours.

Ingredients

Pegfilgrastim is the active ingredient in Lapelga. Inactive ingredients include the following: 10 mM acetate, 5% sorbitol, 0.004% polysorbate 20, and water for injection to total of 0.6 mL; pH: 4.0.

Contraindications

Lapelga should not be given to patients who are allergic to any of Lapelga’s ingredients or products made using the bacteria E. coli.

Cautions

  • Before you start Lapelgla treatment, tell your doctor:
    • About all the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • About your allergies
    • About your current health problems
    • About your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • The following conditions may occur during Lapegla treatment:
    • Bleeding due to low platelets. Tell your doctor right away if you have any signs of bleeding, such as nose bleeds, unexplained bruising, and stools that are black or tarry.
    • Capillary leak syndrome. Seek emergency care right away if you have swelling, trouble breathing, abdominal swelling, tiredness, or feel full.
    • Lung issues, including acute respiratory distress syndrome
    • Ruptured spleen. Tell your doctor right away if you have pain in the left upper stomach or left upper shoulder.
    • Sickle cell disease
    • Increased risk of bone marrow problems and certain types of leukemia in breast or lung cancer patients. Tell your doctor right away if you have a fever, bone pain, bruising, trouble breathing, or bleeding.
  • It is unknown whether it’s safe to use Lapelga with chemotherapy that kills cells. Lapelga should not be used within 14 days before or 24 hours after chemotherapy. In addition, it is unknown whether using Lapelga after certain chemotherapies like mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil, and nitrosoureas is safe and effective.
  • It is unknown whether using Lapelga with radiation is safe and effective; therefore, Lapelga should not be used during radiation.
  • Latex is a component of Lapelga’s needle cover. If you have an allergy to latex, you should speak with your doctor before using Lapelga.
  • Pregnant women should avoid using Lapelga unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Lapelga may affect a nursing baby; therefore, women who are breastfeeding should consult with their doctor before using Lapelga.
  • The safety and efficacy of Lapelga use in children has not been determined.

Side Effects

Lapelga side effects include but are not limited to bone and muscle pain, redness, swelling, and itching at the injection site. Contact your doctor right away if you have worrisome or persistent side effects.
