What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Lescol XL (Fluvastatin) is a medication that doctors prescribe to manage cholesterol levels. It is part of a group of drugs called statins, which work by blocking a specific enzyme that the liver needs to make cholesterol. Fluvastatin mainly lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides while raising high-density lipoprotein (HDL). This medication is usually part of a larger plan that includes a balanced diet and exercise plan to improve heart health.

Directions

Lescol XL should be taken orally as a single dose, typically once daily. It can be taken with or without food, but the tablet should not be broken, crushed, or chewed. The usual starting dose is 80 mg taken at the same time every day. It is important to follow the dosing instructions carefully and consult with a healthcare provider to adjust the dosage as needed.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Lescol XL is Fluvastatin.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fluvastatin or any other ingredient of the medication
  • Acute liver failure or other severe liver problems

Cautions

  • Before taking Lescol XL, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Lescol XL, like other statins, may sometimes cause serious muscle problems, including myopathy (muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness) and, in rare cases, rhabdomyolysis. Symptoms to watch for include unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or fatigue—especially if you also feel feverish or unwell. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any of these signs.
  • In rare cases, statins like Lescol XL can cause an autoimmune reaction called immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM). This condition leads to ongoing muscle weakness and high muscle enzyme levels, even after stopping the medication. Let your doctor know if you experience ongoing muscle weakness.
  • Lescol XL can affect liver function. In rare cases, it may cause serious liver injury. People who drink alcohol often or have had liver disease in the past may be more at risk. Your doctor may check your liver enzymes before you start Lescol XL and from time to time during treatment.
  • Some people taking Lescol XL may notice a small increase in blood sugar levels or HbA1c. This may be more important if you have diabetes or are at risk of developing it.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Lescol XL include flu-like symptoms, sinus infections, upset stomach, and nausea. Some people may also experience urinary tract infections or bronchitis. These reactions are usually mild and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Less commonly, memory loss and confusion have been reported.

Lescol XL can also cause serious side effects such as muscle pain or weakness, which may signal a rare but severe muscle breakdown condition. Your risk is higher if you're over 65, have kidney or thyroid problems, or are taking certain other medications. Liver issues have also been reported, so contact your healthcare provider if you notice fatigue, dark urine, or yellowing of your skin or eyes. The medication may also raise your blood sugar levels, especially if you’re already at risk for diabetes.
